Ever since commit 4a19542e5f69 ("O_CLOEXEC for SCM_RIGHTS") added the
MSG_CMSG_CLOEXEC flag to recvmsg(2), the flag has also been copied into
the returned msg->msg_flags when specified, regardless of whether any
file descriptors were actually received, or whether the protocol
supports receiving file descriptors at all. This behavior was primarily
an implementation artifact: by copying MSG_CMSG_CLOEXEC into the
msg_flags, scm_detach_fds() in net/core/scm.c (and its _compat()
counterpart in net/compat.c) could determine whether it was set without
having to receive a copy of the recvmsg(2) flags.
This mechanism was closely modeled after the internal MSG_CMSG_COMPAT
flag, which is passed by the compat versions of the send[m]msg(2) and
recv[m]msg(2) syscalls to inform various functions that user space
expects a compat layout. When the flag was first implemented by commits
3225fc8a85f4 ("[NET]: Simplify scm handling and sendmsg/recvmsg
invocation, consolidate net compat syscalls.") and 7e8d06bc1d90
("[COMPAT]: Fix MSG_CMSG_COMPAT flag passing, kill
cmsg_compat_recvmsg_fixup.") (in history/history.git), the behavior was
very similar: recvmsg(2) would add MSG_CMSG_COMPAT to the msg_flags, and
put_cmsg() and scm_detach_fds() in net/core/scm.c would read the flag to
determine whether to delegate to their _compat() counterparts.
However, after the initial implementation, more work was done to hide
MSG_CMSG_COMPAT from user space. First, commit 37f7f421cce1 ("[NET]: Do
not leak MSG_CMSG_COMPAT into userspace.") started scrubbing the bit
from msg_flags right before copying it back into user space. Then,
since passing the MSG_CMSG_COMPAT flag into the syscalls from non-compat
code could confuse the kernel, commits 1be374a0518a ("net: Block
MSG_CMSG_COMPAT in send(m)msg and recv(m)msg") and a7526eb5d06b ("net:
Unbreak compat_sys_{send,recv}msg") made them return -EINVAL if user
space attempted to pass the flag. But to reduce breakage, commit
d720d8cec563 ("net: compat: Ignore MSG_CMSG_COMPAT in
compat_sys_{send, recv}msg") rolled that back somewhat, making
MSG_CMSG_COMPAT an error for the non-compat syscalls and a no-op for the
compat syscalls, which is the current status quo.
Even though MSG_CMSG_CLOEXEC was implemented after the kernel started
scrubbing MSG_CMSG_COMPAT from the returned msg_flags, the newer flag
never received the same treatment. At this point, this behavior has
effectively become part of the user-space API, to the extent that
io_uring has been careful in commit 9bb66906f23e ("io_uring: support
multishot in recvmsg") to replicate the behavior in its multishot
IORING_OP_RECVMSG operation.
Therefore, document this behavior to avoid confusion when user space
sees MSG_CMSG_CLOEXEC returned in msg->msg_flags.

- Add a new HISTORY section that covers the history of an API, both
regarding implementations and regarding old standards. This was
previously covered in VERSIONS, and in some cases in STANDARDS.
- Repurpose VERSIONS to cover differing implementations in _current_
systems.
- STANDARDS is reduced to only cover current versions of standards.
That basically means only C11 (C99 has been superseeded by C11; C17
is just a bugfix of C11, so not really a new version), and
POSIX.1-2008 (*-2001 was superseeded by *-2008; *-2017 was just a
bugfix for *-2008). The section also mentions for example 'Linux',
'GNU' or 'BSD' when a non-standard API is Linux- or GNU-only or if
it's (de-facto) standard in the BSDs.
- In some cases content that should go into one of these sections was
in NOTES. Move it from there to where it corresponds.
- In the SYNOPSIS, I added [[deprecated]] in some functions that I
found are deprecated by the relevant standards.
- A few other related changes...

unix_seqpacket_recvmsg() calls unix_dgram_recvmsg() which handles
MSG_TRUNC. This has been the case since the handling was added in
9f6f9af7694ede6314bed281eec74d588ba9474f; see net/unix/af_unix.c:

Replace the date by a placeholder (date) in the repo, as we're
doing with the version (unreleased). It will be filled when the
tarball is generated with 'make dist' (or equivalent) with the
date of the most recent git commit that modifies the page (as was
done previously by update_timestamps.sh, which has been removed).

Now that we have the LIBRARY section, and a 4th argument that
already tells that it's a page from the Linux man-pages project,
the 5th argument isn't telling any information that the default
value wouldn't. So let's just remove it.

STANDARDS seems to be much more extended than CONFORMING TO. For
consistency across the whole manual pages corpus, let's try to
unify, by following the most commonly used section name.

The manual pages are already inconsistent in which headers need
to be included. Right now, not all of the types used by a
function have their required header included in the SYNOPSIS.
If we were to add the headers required by all of the types used by
functions, the SYNOPSIS would grow too much. Not only it would
grow too much, but the information there would be less precise.
Having system_data_types(7) document each type with all the
information about required includes is much more precise, and the
info is centralized so that it's much easier to maintain.
So let's document only the include required for the function
prototype, and also the ones required for the macros needed to
call the function.
<sys/types.h> only defines types, not functions or constants, so
it doesn't belong to man[23] (function) pages at all.
I ignore if some old systems had headers that required you to
include <sys/types.h> *before* them (incomplete headers), but if
so, those implementations would be broken, and those headers
should probably provide some kind of warning. I hope this is not
the case.
[mtk: Already in 2001, POSIX.1 removed the requirement to
include <sys/types.h> for many APIs, so this patch seems
well past due.]

POSIX specifies that the parameters of recvfrom()
shall be 'restrict'. Glibc uses 'restrict' too.
Let's use it here too.

The use of vertical white space in the SYNOPSIS sections
is rather inconsistent. Make it more consistent, subject to the
following heuristics:
* Prefer no blank lines between function signatures by default.
* Where many functions are defined in the SYNOPSIS, add blank
lines where needed to improve readability, possibly by using
blank lines to separate logical groups of functions.

msg_iovlen is incorrectly typed (according to POSIX) in addition
to msg_controllen, but unlike msg_controllen, this wasn't
mentioned for msg_iovlen.
msg_iovlen being incorrectly typed hasn't been reported as a GCC
bug, but there's no point since it is caused by the same
underlying issue.

The statement "With a zero flags argument, recv() is equivalent to
read(2)." is not correct. In the case of passing a UDP socket an
empty buffer the two calls differ. read(2) will be a noop (as it
rightly says in its manpage), but recv(2) will discard the
packet.
We ran into this in networkd, as we use FIONREAD to determine the
buffer size (and allocate the right buffer), so in case someone
passed us an empty packet we would end up in a busy loop when we
were using read(2). Changing to recv(2) fixed the issue
[https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/3299].

This patch fixes the type of msg_controllen in the struct msghdr
definition given in send.2 and recv.2 to match the definition in

EAGAIN/EWOULDBLOCK errors
For a non-blocking socket, POSIX.1-2001/2008 allow either
EAGAIN or EWOULDBLOCK to be returned in cases where a call
would have blocked. Although these constants are defined
with the same value on most Linux architectures (PA-RISC
is the exception), POSIX.1 does not require them to have
the same value. Therefore, a portable application using
the sockets API should test for both errors when checking
this case.
(NB POSIX.1 only mentions EWOULDBLOCK in the context of
the sockets interfaces.)

If the recvfrom() returned address is truncated, the 'fromlen'
argument indicates the actual size of the address, rather than
a count of the number of bytes in the truncated buffer.
Also clarify that the 'from' argument can be NULL, in which
case 'fromlen' should is unused, and should also be NULL.
