We're trying to "standardize" on a paragraphing macro from the three
equivalent ones (P, PP, LP). We (somewhat arbitrarily) agreed on P.

There are different kinds of lists:
Tagged paragraphs
These are fixed in a separate commit (the previous one).
They are used for a list of tags and their descriptions.
An example is this commit message itself.
Ordered lists
Elements are preceeded by a number in parentheses.
These represent a set of steps that have an order.
When there are substeps, they will be numbered like (4.2).
Positional lists
Elements are preceeded by a number in square brackets
(index). These represent fields in a set. The index will
start at:
0 fields of a C data structure, to be consistent
with arrays.
1 fields of a file, to be consistent with tools like
cut(1).
Alternatives list
Elements are preceeded by a letter in parentheses.
These represent a set of (normally) exclusive
alternatives.
Bullet lists
Elements are preceeded by bullet symbols. Anything that
doesn't fit elsewhere usually is covered by this type of
list.
Notes
Not really a list, but the syntax is identical to
"positional lists".
There should always be 2 spaces between the list symbol and the
elements. This doesn't apply to "tagged paragraphs", which use
the default indentation rules.

Replace the date by a placeholder (date) in the repo, as we're
doing with the version (unreleased). It will be filled when the
tarball is generated with 'make dist' (or equivalent) with the
date of the most recent git commit that modifies the page (as was
done previously by update_timestamps.sh, which has been removed).

The root of the repository is becoming a bit overpopulated and
unorganized, due to the recent addition of more mandirs, and more
informative and configuration files too. Let's create a specific
mandir <man/> that contains the mandirs <man[1-8]*>.

Now that we have the LIBRARY section, and a 4th argument that
already tells that it's a page from the Linux man-pages project,
the 5th argument isn't telling any information that the default
value wouldn't. So let's just remove it.

Different source styles are used in different pages to achieve the
same formatted output, and in some cases the source mark-up is a
rather convoluted combination of .RS/.RE/.TP/.PD macros. Simplify
this greatly, and unify all of the pages to use more or less the
same source code style. This makes the source code rather easier
to read, and may simplify future scripted global changes.
The feature test macro info is currently bracketed by .nf/.fi
pairs. This is not strictly necessary (i.e., it makes no
difference to the rendered output), but for the moment we keep

I noticed this while working on some silly "hello, world"
programs, see https://git.sr.ht/~phf/hello-again if you're
curious. Disassembling sh4 code showed trap #31 all over the
place but the syscall(2) man page talked about trap #0x17 and
friends. Checking the kernel sources I got lucky in
arch/sh/kernel/entry-common.S where in commit 3623d138213ae Rich
Felker clarifies the situation.

arm64 is currently documented as receiving the syscall number in
x8.
While this is the correct register, the syscall number is a 32-bit
integer. Bits [63:32] are ignored by the kernel.
So it is more correct to say "w8".

The arm OABI syscall interface is currently documented in terms of
register name aliases defined by the ARM Procedure Call Standard
(APCS). However, these don't make sense in the context of a
binary interface that doesn't comply (or need to comply) with
APCS.
Use the real architectural register names instead.
The names a1-a4, v1... are just aliases for r0-r3, r4... anyway,
so the interface is just the same regardless of which set of names
is used.

In the first table, for the riscv Arch/ABI, the instruction
should be ecall instead of scall.
According the official manual, the instruction has been
renamed.

alpha use v0 e.g. $0 as the return value register both in
syscall ABI and C ABI.

The normal Alpha C ABI use a0~a5 to pass arguments and use v0 as
the return value register. See here

The syscall ABI use v0 as the trap number, a0~a5 to pass arguments
and use a3 as a indicator (bool type) whether has a error occurred.

The v0 is the normal used as return register, and we can see the
return processing doesn't do anything about a0 which is the wrong
register of currently syscall(2) description.
p.s. I found this wrong description because I'm porting Go gc to
a new CPU architecture which is similar to Alpha, And I use the
wrong register at first, then I have inspect the kernel code and
objdump to ensure the right syscall ABI.

On parisc one needs to take care of the 32-bit calling conventions
with 64-bit syscall parameters on a 32-bit kernel. So on parisc we
suffer from the same issues like ARM, PowerPC and Xtensa.

While parisc would normally have the same behavior as ARM/PowerPC,

Architectures that split 64-bit values across register pairs
usually do so according to their C ABI calling convention (which
means endianness). Add some notes to that effect, and change the
readahead example to show a little endian example (since that is
way more common than big endian).
Also start a new list of syscalls that this issue does not apply
to.

The original list of registers was created by confusing strace
source code--this is for parsing legacy 32-bit code (which is
dead and no one cares). Update the list to reflect native ia64
syscall interface.
