(Incidentally, the glibc function source does name the parameter
"name" rather than "node", unlike this man page. (The POSIX man
page uses "nodename".))

We're trying to "standardize" on a paragraphing macro from the three
equivalent ones (P, PP, LP). We (somewhat arbitrarily) agreed on P.
Scripted change:
$ find man* -type f | xargs sed -i '/\.PP/s/PP/P/'
$ find man* -type f | xargs sed -i '/\.LP/s/LP/P/'

When there are multiple tags for a paragraph, using a single TP and
separating the tags with commas makes the man(7) source more complex.
It also has a disadvantage: when searching through a manual page,
heuristics such as " --option" don't work so well.
By using GNU's TQ, we simplify the source of the pages, and improve the
ability to search them.

Scripted patch:
$ grep -rl '^\.sp ' man* | xargs sed -z -i 's/\n\.TE\n\.sp 1\n\.SH/\n.TE\n.SH/'
$ grep -rl '^\.sp ' man* | xargs sed -z -i 's/\n\.TE\n\.sp 1\n\.PP/\n.TE\n.PP/'
plus a few other cases where roff(7) comments made it more complex.
This was a workaround for some groff-1.22.4 bug, but it has been fixed
in groff-1.23.0.

* Stop disabling adjustment and automatic hyphenation before tables,
and incorrectly "restoring" it afterward. In addition to repetitious
boilerplate around tables, the `ad` and `hy` requests, when not given
arguments, do not behave as many man page authors expect. If
adjustment was initially disabled when rendering the page, it was
being activated after `TE` calls, frustrating the desire of the
reader. Furthermore, `hy` when given no argument enables automatic
hyphenation in mode "1", which is not an appropriate value for the
TeX-based hyphenation patterns for English that groff has used for
over 30 years. And analogously to `ad`, a simple `hy` request would
reactivate automatic hyphenation even if the reader had disabled it.
Moreover, such fiddling is often unnecessary. tbl(1) from groff
1.23.0 describes how tbl(1) has always worked, dating back to Michael
Lesk's original implementation at Bell Labs in the 1970s.
"Ordinarily, a table entry is typeset rigidly. It is not filled,
broken, hyphenated, adjusted, or populated with additional inter-
sentence space. ... Text blocks are formatted as was the text prior
to the table, modified by applicable column descriptors. ... Add na
or ad requests to the beginning of a text block to alter its
adjustment distinctly from other text in the document. As with other
table entries, when a text block ends, any alterations to formatting
parameters are discarded. They do not affect subsequent table
entries, not even other text blocks."
* Apropos of the foregoing, add `na` and `nh` requests to the
"Interface" columns of MT-safety tables in pages' "ATTRIBUTES"
sections, so that C function names are not inappropriately hyphenated.
I produced this change with the following GNU sed script.
:start
/^\.ad l/{N;/\n\.nh/{N;/\n\.TS/s/.*/.TS/}}
/^\.TE/{N;/\n\.hy/{N;/\n\.ad/s/.*/.TE/}}
/^Interface.*Attribute.*Value/{N;/\nT{/s/.*/&\n.na\n.nh/
:loop
n
/T{/s/.*/&\n.na\n.nh/
/^\.TE/b start;
b loop
}

- Add a new HISTORY section that covers the history of an API, both
regarding implementations and regarding old standards. This was
previously covered in VERSIONS, and in some cases in STANDARDS.
- Repurpose VERSIONS to cover differing implementations in _current_
systems.
- STANDARDS is reduced to only cover current versions of standards.
That basically means only C11 (C99 has been superseeded by C11; C17
is just a bugfix of C11, so not really a new version), and
POSIX.1-2008 (*-2001 was superseeded by *-2008; *-2017 was just a
bugfix for *-2008). The section also mentions for example 'Linux',
'GNU' or 'BSD' when a non-standard API is Linux- or GNU-only or if
it's (de-facto) standard in the BSDs.
- In some cases content that should go into one of these sections was
in NOTES. Move it from there to where it corresponds.
- In the SYNOPSIS, I added [[deprecated]] in some functions that I
found are deprecated by the relevant standards.
- A few other related changes...

It's a proper noun, whose original letter case should be respected.
glibc's own documentation uses always lowercase; let's do the same here.

Refer consistently to software versions. In most cases, it is done as
<software> <version>. In the case of Linux and glibc, use the project
name, instead of other terms such as 'kernel' or 'library'.
I found the uses of inconsistent language with the following:
$ find man* -type f \
| xargs grep -i '\(since\|before\|after\|until\|to\|from\|in\|between\|version\|with\) \(kernel\|version\|2\.\|3\.\|4\.\|5\.\)' \
| sort
However, I might have missed some cases. Anyway, 99% consistency is
pretty good consistency. We'll fix the remaining cases as we see them.

There are different kinds of lists:
Tagged paragraphs
These are fixed in a separate commit (the previous one).
They are used for a list of tags and their descriptions.
An example is this commit message itself.
Ordered lists
Elements are preceeded by a number in parentheses.
These represent a set of steps that have an order.
When there are substeps, they will be numbered like (4.2).
Positional lists
Elements are preceeded by a number in square brackets
(index). These represent fields in a set. The index will
start at:
0 fields of a C data structure, to be consistent
with arrays.
1 fields of a file, to be consistent with tools like
cut(1).
Alternatives list
Elements are preceeded by a letter in parentheses.
These represent a set of (normally) exclusive
alternatives.
Bullet lists
Elements are preceeded by bullet symbols. Anything that
doesn't fit elsewhere usually is covered by this type of
list.
Notes
Not really a list, but the syntax is identical to
"positional lists".
There should always be 2 spaces between the list symbol and the
elements. This doesn't apply to "tagged paragraphs", which use
the default indentation rules.

Replace the date by a placeholder (date) in the repo, as we're
doing with the version (unreleased). It will be filled when the
tarball is generated with 'make dist' (or equivalent) with the
date of the most recent git commit that modifies the page (as was
done previously by update_timestamps.sh, which has been removed).

Looping with unsigned types is safer. See the link below.
When the iterators are used for accessing an array, use size_t;
otherwise, use the most appropriate unsigned type, which in most
cases is just 'unsigned int'.
Also adjust other variables that have to interact with the
iterators, to avoid comparison of integers of different
signedness.

The root of the repository is becoming a bit overpopulated and
unorganized, due to the recent addition of more mandirs, and more
informative and configuration files too. Let's create a specific
mandir <man/> that contains the mandirs <man[1-8]*>.

Now that we have the LIBRARY section, and a 4th argument that
already tells that it's a page from the Linux man-pages project,
the 5th argument isn't telling any information that the default
value wouldn't. So let's just remove it.
Scripted change:
$ find man* -type f \

consistency across the whole manual pages corpus, let's try to

The previous wording wasn't very explicit, leaving room for
believing that 'errno' may be 0 after returning EAI_SYSTEM.
Use a wording similar to other pages, for added consistency.
[mtk: edited commit message title; also, POSIX notes that
'errno' is set in this case.]

Both POSIX and glibc use 'restrict' in getaddrinfo().
Let's use it here too.

Make the formatting more consistent inside the tables in the
ATTRIBUTES sections. Make the source code more uniform; in
particular, eliminate the use of custom tweaks using
'lbwNN'/'lwNN' and .br macros. In addition, ensure that
hyphenation and text justification do not occur inside the tables.
This is a script-driven edit:

Different source styles are used in different pages to achieve the
same formatted output, and in some cases the source mark-up is a
rather convoluted combination of .RS/.RE/.TP/.PD macros. Simplify
this greatly, and unify all of the pages to use more or less the
same source code style. This makes the source code rather easier
to read, and may simplify future scripted global changes.
The feature test macro info is currently bracketed by .nf/.fi
pairs. This is not strictly necessary (i.e., it makes no
difference to the rendered output), but for the moment we keep
these "brackets" in case they may be replaced with something else.

[mtk: the coding style used in the example could lead people to
inject memory leaks in their code if they cut/paste/modify the
code to replace "exit" paths with "return" paths from a library
function.]
[Marko, from the mail thread discussing this patch:]
You are right about terminating the process. However, people copy
that example and put the code in a function changing "exit" to
"return". There are a bunch of examples like that here
https://beej.us/guide/bgnet/html/#poll, for instance. That error
bothered me when reading the network programming guide
https://beej.us/guide/bgnet/html/. Than I looked for information
elsewhere:
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/6712740/valgrind-reporting-that-getaddrinfo-is-leaking-memory
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/15690303/server-client-sockets-freeaddrinfo3-placement
And finally, I checked manual pages and saw where these errors
come from.
When you change that to a function and return without doing
freeaddrinfo, that is a memory leak. I believe an example should
show good programming practices. Relying on exiting and clearing
the memory in that case is not such a case. In my opinion, these
examples lead people to make mistakes in their programs.

This brings the declaration and use closer together (thus aiding
readability) and also clearly indicates the scope of the loop

Remove request ".br" if it precedes a line, that begins with a

Quoting Branden:
*roff escape sequences may sometimes look like C escapes, but that
is misleading. *roff is in part a macro language and that means
recursive expansion to arbitrary depths.
You can get away with "\\" in a context where no macro expansion
is taking place, but try to spell a literal backslash this way in
the argument to a macro and you will likely be unhappy with
results.
Try viewing the attached file with "man -l".
"\e" is the preferred and portable way to get a portable "escape
literal" going back to CSTR #54, the original Bell Labs troff
paper.
groff(7) discusses the issue:
\\ reduces to a single backslash; useful to delay its
interpretation as escape character in copy mode. For a
printable backslash, use \e, or even better \[rs], to be
independent from the current escape character.
As of groff 1.22.4, groff_man(7) does as well:
\e Widely used in man pages to represent a backslash output
glyph. It works reliably as long as the .ec request is
not used, which should never happen in man pages, and it
is slightly more portable than the more exact ‘\(rs’
(“reverse solidus”) escape sequence.
People not concerned with portability to extremely old troffs should
probably just use \(rs (or \[rs]), as it means "the backslash
glyph", not "the glyph corresponding to whatever the current escape
character is".

_POSIX_SOURCE was a POSIX.1-1990 creation that was soon made
obsolete bu _POSIX_C_SOURCE. Retaining mention of it
in the feature test macro requirements section of the
SYNOPSIS doesn't contain important information, and may
mislead readers into actually trying to use this macro.
A few mentions of it a maintained in a some pages where
defining _POSIX_SOURCE inhibits some behavior.

When hints is NULL, glibc assumes hints.ai_flags is
AI_V4MAPPED|AI_ADDRCONFIG whereas POSIX says 0.

This patch documents the order of the getaddrinfo(3) results
(RFC 3484), how should the application deal with that,
mentions the extremely common cause of having multiple
results per query (both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses available)
and mentions /etc/gai.conf.
