* Stop disabling adjustment and automatic hyphenation before tables,
and incorrectly "restoring" it afterward. In addition to repetitious
boilerplate around tables, the `ad` and `hy` requests, when not given
arguments, do not behave as many man page authors expect. If
adjustment was initially disabled when rendering the page, it was
being activated after `TE` calls, frustrating the desire of the
reader. Furthermore, `hy` when given no argument enables automatic
hyphenation in mode "1", which is not an appropriate value for the
TeX-based hyphenation patterns for English that groff has used for
over 30 years. And analogously to `ad`, a simple `hy` request would
reactivate automatic hyphenation even if the reader had disabled it.
Moreover, such fiddling is often unnecessary. tbl(1) from groff
1.23.0 describes how tbl(1) has always worked, dating back to Michael
Lesk's original implementation at Bell Labs in the 1970s.
"Ordinarily, a table entry is typeset rigidly. It is not filled,
broken, hyphenated, adjusted, or populated with additional inter-
sentence space. ... Text blocks are formatted as was the text prior
to the table, modified by applicable column descriptors. ... Add na
or ad requests to the beginning of a text block to alter its
adjustment distinctly from other text in the document. As with other
table entries, when a text block ends, any alterations to formatting
parameters are discarded. They do not affect subsequent table
entries, not even other text blocks."
* Apropos of the foregoing, add `na` and `nh` requests to the
"Interface" columns of MT-safety tables in pages' "ATTRIBUTES"
sections, so that C function names are not inappropriately hyphenated.

- Add a new HISTORY section that covers the history of an API, both
regarding implementations and regarding old standards. This was
previously covered in VERSIONS, and in some cases in STANDARDS.
- Repurpose VERSIONS to cover differing implementations in _current_
systems.
- STANDARDS is reduced to only cover current versions of standards.
That basically means only C11 (C99 has been superseeded by C11; C17
is just a bugfix of C11, so not really a new version), and
POSIX.1-2008 (*-2001 was superseeded by *-2008; *-2017 was just a
bugfix for *-2008). The section also mentions for example 'Linux',
'GNU' or 'BSD' when a non-standard API is Linux- or GNU-only or if
it's (de-facto) standard in the BSDs.
- In some cases content that should go into one of these sections was
in NOTES. Move it from there to where it corresponds.
- In the SYNOPSIS, I added [[deprecated]] in some functions that I
found are deprecated by the relevant standards.
- A few other related changes...

VERSIONS and STANDARDS are closely related (and often the distinction is
not so clear). Now that we're going to add another section, HISTORY,
that is related to both, it makes sense to have the three together.
As a curiosity, the list in man-pages(7) that detailed what each section
should contain had them by accident(?) in the order that we're moving
to, instead of the order that was used elsewhere.

This removal caused inconveniences to some programmers. We've agreed to
keep the information about C89, since there's an easy way to keep it
correct by checking against a plain-text copy of the standard itself:

We will also do a split of the information in STANDARDS, since now it's

C89 is obsolete, and programs should target newer standards. If someone
needs information about is, the Standard itself is a better resource.
Let's move forward, so readers get the intended notice that C89 is not a
useful version of C.

Refer consistently to software versions. In most cases, it is done as
<software> <version>. In the case of Linux and glibc, use the project
name, instead of other terms such as 'kernel' or 'library'.
I found the uses of inconsistent language with the following:

The WG14 charter for C23 added one principle to the ones in
previous standards:
[
15. Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) should be
self-documenting when possible. In particular, the order of
parameters in function declarations should be arranged such that
the size of an array appears before the array. The purpose is to
allow Variable-Length Array (VLA) notation to be used. This not
only makes the code's purpose clearer to human readers, but also
makes static analysis easier. Any new APIs added to the Standard
should take this into consideration.
]
ISO C doesn't allow using VLA syntax when the parameter used for
the size of the array is declared _after_ the parameter that is a
VLa. That's a minor issue that could be easily changed in the
language without backwards-compatibility issues, and in fact it
seems to have been proposed, and not yet discarded, even if it's
not going to change in C23.
Since the manual pages SYNOPSIS are not bounded by strict C legal
syntax, but we already use some "tricks" to try to convey the most
information to the reader even if it might not be the most legal
syntax, we can also make a small compromise in this case, using
illegal syntax (at least not yet legalized) to add important
information to the function prototypes.
If we're lucky, compiler authors, and maybe even WG14 members, may
be satisfied by the syntax used in these manual pages, and may
decide to implement this feature to the language.
It seems to me a sound syntax that isn't ambiguous, even if it
deviates from the common pattern in C that declarations _always_
come before use. But it's a reasonable tradeoff.
This change will make the contract between the programmer and the
implementation clearer just by reading a prototype. For example,

vs
size_t strlcpy(char dst[restrict .size], const char *restrict src,
size_t size);
the second prototype above makes it clear that the 'dst' buffer
will be safe from overflow, but the 'src' one clearly needs to be
NUL-terminated, or it might cause UB, since nothing tells the
function how long it is.

Replace the date by a placeholder (date) in the repo, as we're
doing with the version (unreleased). It will be filled when the
tarball is generated with 'make dist' (or equivalent) with the
date of the most recent git commit that modifies the page (as was
done previously by update_timestamps.sh, which has been removed).

Now that we have the LIBRARY section, and a 4th argument that
already tells that it's a page from the Linux man-pages project,
the 5th argument isn't telling any information that the default
value wouldn't. So let's just remove it.

Make the formatting more consistent inside the tables in the
ATTRIBUTES sections. Make the source code more uniform; in
particular, eliminate the use of custom tweaks using
'lbwNN'/'lwNN' and .br macros. In addition, ensure that
hyphenation and text justification do not occur inside the tables.

Different source styles are used in different pages to achieve the
same formatted output, and in some cases the source mark-up is a
rather convoluted combination of .RS/.RE/.TP/.PD macros. Simplify
this greatly, and unify all of the pages to use more or less the
same source code style. This makes the source code rather easier
to read, and may simplify future scripted global changes.
The feature test macro info is currently bracketed by .nf/.fi
pairs. This is not strictly necessary (i.e., it makes no
difference to the rendered output), but for the moment we keep
these "brackets" in case they may be replaced with something else.

Paragraphs should be separated by suitable markers (usually
either .PP or .IP). Do not separate paragraphs using blank
lines, as this results in poor rendering in some output
formats (such as PostScript and PDF).

The function make_message illustrates how to use vsnprintf to
determine the required amount of memory for a specific format and
its arguments.
If make_message is called with a format which will use exactly
INT_MAX characters (excluding '\0'), then the size++ calculation
will overflow the signed integer "size", which is an undefined
behaviour in C.
Since malloc and vsnprintf rightfully take a size_t argument, I
decided to use a size_t variable for size calculation. Therefore,
this patched code uses variables of the same data types as
expected by function arguments.
Proof of concept (tested on Linux/glibc amd64):
int main() { make_message("%647s%2147483000s", "", ""); }
If the code is compiled with address sanitizer (gcc
-fsanitize=address) you can see the following line, assuming that
a signed integer overflow simply leads to INT_MIN:

groff(7) discusses the issue:
\\ reduces to a single backslash; useful to delay its
interpretation as escape character in copy mode. For a
printable backslash, use \e, or even better \[rs], to be
independent from the current escape character.
As of groff 1.22.4, groff_man(7) does as well:
\e Widely used in man pages to represent a backslash output
glyph. It works reliably as long as the .ec request is
not used, which should never happen in man pages, and it
is slightly more portable than the more exact ‘\(rs’
(“reverse solidus”) escape sequence.
People not concerned with portability to extremely old troffs should
probably just use \(rs (or \[rs]), as it means "the backslash
glyph", not "the glyph corresponding to whatever the current escape
character is".

Under the FTM requirements all of these pages document the
requirement for _ISOC99_SOURCE. And feature_test_macros(7) now
documents that "cc -std=c99" produces the same effect as defining
_ISOC99_SOURCE. So, all of these pages don't additionally need
to specify "or 'cc -std=c99'" under the FTM requirements
in the SYNOPSIS. Removing that redundant text also simplifies
the SYNOPSIS a little.

Rich Felker noted that "scare text" in the man page warned about
the use of snprintf() on libc, and that some people had cited
this as a reason not to use snprintf(). Linux libc is now
ancient history, so there is no real need to keep that text.
But, while we're at it, we may as well clear out all of the
other ancient libc4 and libc5 pieces in the page. They are
nowadays more clutter than help.

The printf(3) manpage says that a negative precision is taken to
be zero, whereas printf(3p) says that a negative precision is
taken as if the precision were omitted. glibc agrees with the
latter (POSIX) specification.
Test code:
printf("%f\n",42.0); // "42.000000"
printf("%.*f\n",0,42.0); // "42"
printf("%.*f\n",-1,42.0); // "42.000000"
This patch corrects the explanation to match what actually happens.

Some existing code relies on techniques like the following to
append text to a buffer:
$ cat s.c

However, the standards say the results are undefined if source
and destination buffers overlap, and with suitable compiler
options, recent changes can cause unexpected results:
