"Early 486" comes from an uncited wikipedia table, added in
<https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=CPUID&diff=prev&oldid=592047209>
<https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=CPUID&diff=prev&oldid=592047978>
but I spot-checked the rest of the table accurate to CPUs in my house
(the oldest of which is an original Celeron, so no 486),
and "early 486" is better than "early x86" which can mean anything.
This does leave earlier x86 unmentioned,
but Linux hasn't targeted those in over a decade,
so they're out of scope anyway.

We're trying to "standardize" on a paragraphing macro from the three
equivalent ones (P, PP, LP). We (somewhat arbitrarily) agreed on P.

Remove the "version" sysfs entry. This entry was changed into
two sysfs entries: driver_version and firmware_version by
patch "(6d90615f1346 scsi: smartpqi: add sysfs entries)" in Linus's
tree Aug 22 2019.
Add HISTORY section.
Enumerate old sysfs entries replaced by newer entries.

When there are multiple tags for a paragraph, using a single TP and
separating the tags with commas makes the man(7) source more complex.
It also has a disadvantage: when searching through a manual page,
heuristics such as " --option" don't work so well.
By using GNU's TQ, we simplify the source of the pages, and improve the
ability to search them.

Add in some host level sysfs entries:
enable_stream_detection - Send RAID 5/6 writes down the normal I/O path.
Allow for full-stripe write requests.
ssd_smart_path_enabled - Indicates that our Accelerated I/O (AIO) path
is enabled (AIO).
enable_r5_writes - Allow RAID 5 write operations down the AIO path.
enable_r6_writes - Allow RAID 6 write operations down the AIO path.

Add in a description for module parameter disable_managed_interrupts.
This module parameter allows users to disable automatic irq affinity
setting by turning off the PCI_IRQ_AFFINITY flag when requesting
interrupts.
When the flag PCI_IRQ_AFFINITY is set, users cannot change the interrupt
affinity through /proc/irq/<irq#>/*affinity*
Some customers would like to change interrupt affinity based on their
requirements.

Drop spurious, nilpotent uses of *roff `\c` escape sequence.
Quoting groff_man_style(7):
\c End a text line without inserting space or attempting a break.
Normally, if filling is enabled, the end of a text line is
treated like a space; an output line _may_ be broken there (if
not, an adjustable space is inserted); if filling is disabled,
the line _will_ be broken there, as in .EX/.EE examples. The
next line is interpreted as usual and can include a macro call
(contrast with \newline). \c is useful when three font styles
are needed in a single word, as in a command synopsis.

- Add a new HISTORY section that covers the history of an API, both
regarding implementations and regarding old standards. This was
previously covered in VERSIONS, and in some cases in STANDARDS.
- Repurpose VERSIONS to cover differing implementations in _current_
systems.
- STANDARDS is reduced to only cover current versions of standards.
That basically means only C11 (C99 has been superseeded by C11; C17
is just a bugfix of C11, so not really a new version), and
POSIX.1-2008 (*-2001 was superseeded by *-2008; *-2017 was just a
bugfix for *-2008). The section also mentions for example 'Linux',
'GNU' or 'BSD' when a non-standard API is Linux- or GNU-only or if
it's (de-facto) standard in the BSDs.
- In some cases content that should go into one of these sections was
in NOTES. Move it from there to where it corresponds.
- In the SYNOPSIS, I added [[deprecated]] in some functions that I
found are deprecated by the relevant standards.
- A few other related changes...

Refer consistently to software versions. In most cases, it is done as
<software> <version>. In the case of Linux and glibc, use the project
name, instead of other terms such as 'kernel' or 'library'.
I found the uses of inconsistent language with the following:

However, I might have missed some cases. Anyway, 99% consistency is

There are different kinds of lists:
Tagged paragraphs
These are fixed in a separate commit (the previous one).
They are used for a list of tags and their descriptions.
An example is this commit message itself.
Ordered lists
Elements are preceeded by a number in parentheses.
These represent a set of steps that have an order.
When there are substeps, they will be numbered like (4.2).
Positional lists
Elements are preceeded by a number in square brackets
(index). These represent fields in a set. The index will
start at:
0 fields of a C data structure, to be consistent
with arrays.
1 fields of a file, to be consistent with tools like
cut(1).
Alternatives list
Elements are preceeded by a letter in parentheses.
These represent a set of (normally) exclusive
alternatives.
Bullet lists
Elements are preceeded by bullet symbols. Anything that
doesn't fit elsewhere usually is covered by this type of
list.
Notes
Not really a list, but the syntax is identical to
"positional lists".
There should always be 2 spaces between the list symbol and the
elements. This doesn't apply to "tagged paragraphs", which use
the default indentation rules.

Replace the date by a placeholder (date) in the repo, as we're
doing with the version (unreleased). It will be filled when the
tarball is generated with 'make dist' (or equivalent) with the
date of the most recent git commit that modifies the page (as was
done previously by update_timestamps.sh, which has been removed).

Kernel __u64 and similar types are ABI-compatible, and mostly
API-compatible with ISO C types. User-space programmers don't
care about kernel details, and should only use libc types.
Document syscalls and structures provided by the Linux kernel as
if they used libc types.
There's work in the kernel to remove this small API
incompatibility, which is only for pointers or printf specifiers.
Since I couldn't find any structure that uses pointers, there
shouldn't be any issues here. Also, the only pointer I found was
in a syscall parameter, but since syscall(2) doesn't check its
arguments' types, we're also safe there.
This patch doesn't go without controversy. Check the discussions
in the links below.

Now that we have the LIBRARY section, and a 4th argument that
already tells that it's a page from the Linux man-pages project,
the 5th argument isn't telling any information that the default
value wouldn't. So let's just remove it.

STANDARDS seems to be much more extended than CONFORMING TO. For
consistency across the whole manual pages corpus, let's try to
unify, by following the most commonly used section name.

Fix up the busted OSC command list (reset palette and
set palette). Remove CSI prefix from the list of non-CSI
escapes. End all items of said list with periods,
matching other sections of the page.

The majority of pages use .nf/.fi in SYNOPSIS, but there are
still many that don't and use .br to achieve newlines. Fix many
of those. This brings greater consistency to the pages, which
eases editing and may ease future scripted edits to the pages.
Many of these changes were script-assisted, with some additional
manual edits.

Use printf()'s '#' flag character to prepend the string "0x".
However, when the number is printed in uppercase, and the prefix

Historically, a comment of the following form at the top of a
manual page was used to indicate too man(1) that the use of tbl(1)
was required in order to process tables:
'\" t
However, at least as far back as 2001 (according to Branden),
man-db's man(1) automatically uses tbl(1) as needed, rendering
this comment unnecessary. And indeed many existing pages in
man-pages that have tables don't have this comment at the top of
the file. So, drop the comment from those files where it is
present.

iproute2 allows you to specify the netns for either side of a veth
interface at creation time. Add an example of this to veth(4) so
it doesn't sound like you have to move the interfaces in a
separate step.
Verified with commands:
# ip netns add alpha
# ip netns add bravo
# ip link add foo netns alpha type veth peer bar netns bravo
# ip -n alpha link show
# ip -n bravo link show

Since 65d9982d7e523a1a8e7c9af012da0d166f72fc56 (4.17), it follows
xterm rather than common sense and consistency, being the only
command 1..9 where N+20 doesn't undo what N did. As libvte
0.51.90 got changed the same way, this behaviour will probably
stay.

*roff escape sequences may sometimes look like C escapes, but that
is misleading. *roff is in part a macro language and that means
recursive expansion to arbitrary depths.
You can get away with "\\" in a context where no macro expansion
is taking place, but try to spell a literal backslash this way in
the argument to a macro and you will likely be unhappy with
results.
Try viewing the attached file with "man -l".
"\e" is the preferred and portable way to get a portable "escape
literal" going back to CSTR #54, the original Bell Labs troff
paper.
groff(7) discusses the issue:
\\ reduces to a single backslash; useful to delay its
interpretation as escape character in copy mode. For a
printable backslash, use \e, or even better \[rs], to be
independent from the current escape character.
As of groff 1.22.4, groff_man(7) does as well:
\e Widely used in man pages to represent a backslash output
glyph. It works reliably as long as the .ec request is
not used, which should never happen in man pages, and it
is slightly more portable than the more exact ‘\(rs’
(“reverse solidus”) escape sequence.
People not concerned with portability to extremely old troffs should
probably just use \(rs (or \[rs]), as it means "the backslash
glyph", not "the glyph corresponding to whatever the current escape
character is".

groff_man(7) in groff 1.22.4 attempts to throw man page
writers a bone here:
\& Zero‐width space. Append to an input line to prevent
an end‐of‐ sentence punctuation sequence from being
recognized as such, or insert at the beginning of an
input line to prevent a dot or apostrophe from being
interpreted as the beginning of a roff request.
