2023-10-31man*/: srcfix (Use .P instead of .PP or .LP)Alejandro Colomar1-7/+7
We're trying to "standardize" on a paragraphing macro from the three equivalent ones (P, PP, LP). We (somewhat arbitrarily) agreed on P. Scripted change: $ find man* -type f | xargs sed -i '/\.PP/s/PP/P/' $ find man* -type f | xargs sed -i '/\.LP/s/LP/P/' Suggested-by: "G. Branden Robinson" <branden@debian.org> Cc: Ingo Schwarze <schwarze@openbsd.org> Signed-off-by: Alejandro Colomar <alx@kernel.org>

This improves readability in the source code, since it delimits where the escape sequence ends. Cc: наб <nabijaczleweli@nabijaczleweli.xyz> Cc: "G. Branden Robinson" <g.branden.robinson@gmail.com> Cc: Brian Inglis <Brian.Inglis@Shaw.ca> Signed-off-by: Alejandro Colomar <alx@kernel.org>

2022-10-25ascii.7: Chase down History to earliestнаб1-3/+1
Cf., well, the UNIX Programmer's Manual: https://www.tuhs.org/Archive/Distributions/Research/Dennis_v1/UNIX_ProgrammersManual_Nov71.pdf PDF page 191; yes, the typographical convention here is insane, and the contemprary-correct way to refer to this page from within the manual would be /just/ "/etc/ascii", but, given the context, "/etc/ascii (VII)" makes the most sense to me Signed-off-by: Ahelenia Ziemiańska <nabijaczleweli@nabijaczleweli.xyz> Signed-off-by: Alejandro Colomar <alx@kernel.org>
2022-10-09dist.mk, All pages: .TH: Generate date at 'make dist'Alejandro Colomar1-1/+1
Replace the date by a placeholder (date) in the repo, as we're doing with the version (unreleased). It will be filled when the tarball is generated with 'make dist' (or equivalent) with the date of the most recent git commit that modifies the page (as was done previously by update_timestamps.sh, which has been removed). Scripted change (mostly): $ find man* -type f \ | xargs sed -Ei '/^\.TH /s/.TH +([^ ]+ +[^ ]+) +[^ ]+ +(.*)/.TH \1 (date) \2/' Signed-off-by: Alejandro Colomar <alx@kernel.org>

2022-09-09Revert "src.mk, All pages: Move man* to man/"Alejandro Colomar1-0/+182

2022-09-05src.mk, All pages: Move man* to man/Alejandro Colomar1-182/+0
The root of the repository is becoming a bit overpopulated and unorganized, due to the recent addition of more mandirs, and more informative and configuration files too. Let's create a specific mandir <man/> that contains the mandirs <man[1-8]*>. Signed-off-by: Alejandro Colomar <alx.manpages@gmail.com>
2022-08-21All pages: Remove the 5th argument to .THAlejandro Colomar1-1/+1
Now that we have the LIBRARY section, and a 4th argument that already tells that it's a page from the Linux man-pages project, the 5th argument isn't telling any information that the default value wouldn't. So let's just remove it. Scripted change: $ find man* -type f \ | xargs sed -Ei '/^.TH /s/(.TH +[^ ]+ +[^ ]+ +[^ ]+ +"[^"]+") .*/\1/' Acked-by: "G. 2021-08-08ascii.7: ffix: add vertical rule to separate the two columnsнаб1-1/+1
I regularly get mildly lost in this table (and, indeed, didn't realise it had two columns the first few times I used it to look at something from the left column) ‒ separating the two columns improves clarity, and makes which soup of numbers belongs to which character much more obvious Other encodings don't need this as they don't use double-columnated tables Signed-off-by: Ahelenia Ziemiańska <nabijaczleweli@nabijaczleweli.xyz> Signed-off-by: Alejandro Colomar <alx.manpages@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Michael Kerrisk <mtk.manpages@gmail.com>

2020-07-24Various pages: Drop t comment headerMike Frysinger1-1/+0
Historically, a comment of the following form at the top of a manual page was used to indicate too man(1) that the use of tbl(1) was required in order to process tables: '\" t However, at least as far back as 2001 (according to Branden), man-db's man(1) automatically uses tbl(1) as needed, rendering this comment unnecessary. And indeed many existing pages in man-pages that have tables don't have this comment at the top of the file. So, drop the comment from those files where it is present. 2014-10-01ascii.7: Charset pages unification, minor cleanupsMarko Myllynen1-6/+8
This and the follow-up patches will provide unification of charset pages, minor cleanups, and some unifying cosmetic changes. References are adjusted so that all pages include a reference to charsets(7), which contains a description of these sets, stray comments are removed, some obsolete statements (like ISO 8859-1 being the de-facto ASCII replacement) are removed, and some minor reformatting to minimize diff's between the pages are done. The actual substance, the character tables, remain unchanged. This series changes the following pages (under man7): ascii, armscii, cp1251, koi8-r, koi8-u, and all of iso_8859-*.
