We're trying to "standardize" on a paragraphing macro from the three
equivalent ones (P, PP, LP). We (somewhat arbitrarily) agreed on P.
Scripted change:
$ find man* -type f | xargs sed -i '/\.PP/s/PP/P/'
$ find man* -type f | xargs sed -i '/\.LP/s/LP/P/'

- Add a new HISTORY section that covers the history of an API, both
regarding implementations and regarding old standards. This was
previously covered in VERSIONS, and in some cases in STANDARDS.
- Repurpose VERSIONS to cover differing implementations in _current_
systems.
- STANDARDS is reduced to only cover current versions of standards.
That basically means only C11 (C99 has been superseeded by C11; C17
is just a bugfix of C11, so not really a new version), and
POSIX.1-2008 (*-2001 was superseeded by *-2008; *-2017 was just a
bugfix for *-2008). The section also mentions for example 'Linux',
'GNU' or 'BSD' when a non-standard API is Linux- or GNU-only or if
it's (de-facto) standard in the BSDs.
- In some cases content that should go into one of these sections was
in NOTES. Move it from there to where it corresponds.
- In the SYNOPSIS, I added [[deprecated]] in some functions that I
found are deprecated by the relevant standards.
- A few other related changes...

VERSIONS and STANDARDS are closely related (and often the distinction is
not so clear). Now that we're going to add another section, HISTORY,
that is related to both, it makes sense to have the three together.
As a curiosity, the list in man-pages(7) that detailed what each section
should contain had them by accident(?) in the order that we're moving
to, instead of the order that was used elsewhere.

Two consecutive IPs without text don't make sense, since they are
paragraph separators. The reason we needed it was that PD 0 was
misplaced.
This extra IP was also causing another problem: we needed to specify
again the indentation of the outer list.

It's a proper noun, whose original letter case should be respected.
glibc's own documentation uses always lowercase; let's do the same here.

Refer consistently to software versions. In most cases, it is done as
<software> <version>. In the case of Linux and glibc, use the project
name, instead of other terms such as 'kernel' or 'library'.
I found the uses of inconsistent language with the following:
$ find man* -type f \
| xargs grep -i '\(since\|before\|after\|until\|to\|from\|in\|between\|version\|with\) \(kernel\|version\|2\.\|3\.\|4\.\|5\.\)' \
| sort
However, I might have missed some cases. Anyway, 99% consistency is
pretty good consistency. We'll fix the remaining cases as we see them.

Semi-scripted change:
$ find man* -type f \
| xargs grep -L '\.so' \
| while read f; do
P=$(basename $f);
T=$(grep '\.TH ' $f | cut -f2,3 -d' ' | sed 's/ /./');
p=$(echo $P | tr '[:upper:]' '[:lower:]');
t=$(echo $T | tr '[:upper:]' '[:lower:]');
Tn=$(echo $T | sed 's/\.[^.]\+$//')
Pn=$(echo $P | sed 's/\.[^.]\+$//')
N=$(man_section $f NAME \
| sed -n '/NAME/,/ - /p' \
| sed 's/ - .*//' \
| grep -v '^NAME$' \
| tr ', ' '\n' \
| grep -i "^$Pn$" \
| head -n1)
test $P = $T \
&& test -n $N \
&& continue;
if test "x$p" != "x$t"; then
echo 1 $P $T $N;
elif test -z "$N"; then
sed -i "/\.TH /s/$Tn/$Pn/" $f;
fi;
done;
Most of the changes produced by this script needed to be reverted,
but the some of them were good.

There are different kinds of lists:
Tagged paragraphs
These are fixed in a separate commit (the previous one).
They are used for a list of tags and their descriptions.
An example is this commit message itself.
Ordered lists
Elements are preceeded by a number in parentheses.
These represent a set of steps that have an order.
When there are substeps, they will be numbered like (4.2).
Positional lists
Elements are preceeded by a number in square brackets
(index). These represent fields in a set. The index will
start at:
0 fields of a C data structure, to be consistent
with arrays.
1 fields of a file, to be consistent with tools like
cut(1).
Alternatives list
Elements are preceeded by a letter in parentheses.
These represent a set of (normally) exclusive
alternatives.
Bullet lists
Elements are preceeded by bullet symbols. Anything that
doesn't fit elsewhere usually is covered by this type of
list.
Notes
Not really a list, but the syntax is identical to
"positional lists".
There should always be 2 spaces between the list symbol and the
elements. This doesn't apply to "tagged paragraphs", which use
the default indentation rules.

Replace the date by a placeholder (date) in the repo, as we're
doing with the version (unreleased). It will be filled when the
tarball is generated with 'make dist' (or equivalent) with the
date of the most recent git commit that modifies the page (as was
done previously by update_timestamps.sh, which has been removed).
Scripted change (mostly):

The root of the repository is becoming a bit overpopulated and
unorganized, due to the recent addition of more mandirs, and more
informative and configuration files too. Let's create a specific
mandir <man/> that contains the mandirs <man[1-8]*>.

Now that we have the LIBRARY section, and a 4th argument that
already tells that it's a page from the Linux man-pages project,
the 5th argument isn't telling any information that the default
value wouldn't. So let's just remove it.

STANDARDS seems to be much more extended than CONFORMING TO. For
consistency across the whole manual pages corpus, let's try to
unify, by following the most commonly used section name.

CAVEATS is an interesting section. There's a slight difference
between CAVEATS and BUGS. We usually have a hard time fitting
what would go into CAVEATS into other sections (usually BUGS and
NOTES); it would be easier if we had the section. Let's add it.
This section has been used in manual pages by authors from a wide
range of projects including AT&T, Korn shell, Perl, GNU and BSD
since the early 1980s. Using the section was first officially
recommended in 2002 by the file </usr/share/misc/mdoc.template> in
NetBSD and OpenBSD.

Brian W. Kernighan, 1974 [UNIX For Beginners]:
[
Hints for Preparing Documents
Most documents go through several versions
(always more than you expected)
before they are finally finished.
Accordingly,
you should do whatever possible
to make the job of changing them easy.
First,
when you do the purely mechanical operations of typing,
type so subsequent editing will be easy.
Start each sentence on a new line.
Make lines short,
and break lines at natural places,
such as after commas and semicolons,
rather than randomly.
Since most people change documents
by rewriting phrases and
adding, deleting and rearranging sentences,
these precautions simplify any editing you have to do later.
]
He mentioned phrases,
and they are indeed commonly the operands of patches
(see this patch's changes (the second part) as an example),
so they make for a much better breaking point than random
within a clause that is too long to fit a line.
The downside is that they are more difficult to automatically spot
than clause breaks (which tend to have associated punctuation).
But we are humans writing patches,
not machines,
and therefore we should be able to decide and detect them better.

* Advise usage of \~ escape instead of \SPACE; the former, a groff
extension from circa 1990, has been supported by Heirloom Doctools
troff since 2005 and by mandoc since 2019. The advantage is that
\~ is an _adjustable_ non-breaking space, so it will typeset
non-jarringly both in .EX/.EE examples when filling is off, and in
normal running text (which is filled).

In man-pages-5.11, a large number of pages were edited to achieve
greater consistency in the SYNOPIS, RETURN VALUE and ATTRIBUTES
sections. To avoid future inconsistencies, try to capture some of
the preferred conventions in text in man-pages(7).

When I inherited man-pages in 2004, it was a hodge-podge mix of
American vs British spelling. My native spelling is the latter,
but I value consistency and felt that things needed to be
standardized on one or other, and in computing, American is the
norm so that is what I settled on.
Among the changes was the substitution of various instances
of "acknowledgement" for "acknowledgment". The latter spelling is
not one I care for, but I believed it to be the American norm.
Alex Colomar proposed a patch to change the spelling back
to "acknowledgement", and some discussion and investigation
ensued, whereby I learned the following:
* The situation is not clear cut.
* Historically, "acknowledgment" was the norm in British English,
but was eclipsed by "acknowledgement" some decades ago.
* Even in American English, "acknowledgment" is not universal,
and "acknowledgement" has become more common in recent decades
(although it still remains minority usage) [2].
* The BSD license uses "acknowledgement" even though it was
(presumably) written in California.
* The POSIX standard uses "acknowledgement".
* The Debian BTS uses "acknowledgement".
* Looking at a corpus of manual pages from various systems
that I have assembled over the years, "acknowledgement" seems
a little more common than "acknowledgment".
Summary: the situation is not clear cut, but let's follow BSD,
POSIX, and the personal preference of the man-pages maintainers.

Quoting Branden:
*roff escape sequences may sometimes look like C escapes, but that
is misleading. *roff is in part a macro language and that means
recursive expansion to arbitrary depths.
You can get away with "\\" in a context where no macro expansion
is taking place, but try to spell a literal backslash this way in
the argument to a macro and you will likely be unhappy with
results.
Try viewing the attached file with "man -l".
"\e" is the preferred and portable way to get a portable "escape
literal" going back to CSTR #54, the original Bell Labs troff
paper.
groff(7) discusses the issue:
\\ reduces to a single backslash; useful to delay its
interpretation as escape character in copy mode. For a
printable backslash, use \e, or even better \[rs], to be
independent from the current escape character.
As of groff 1.22.4, groff_man(7) does as well:
\e Widely used in man pages to represent a backslash output
glyph. It works reliably as long as the .ec request is
not used, which should never happen in man pages, and it
is slightly more portable than the more exact ‘\(rs’
(“reverse solidus”) escape sequence.
People not concerned with portability to extremely old troffs should
probably just use \(rs (or \[rs]), as it means "the backslash
glyph", not "the glyph corresponding to whatever the current escape
character is".

People seem to be using "cf." ("confere"), which means "compare",
to mean "see" instead, for which the Latin abbreviation would be
"q.v." ("quod vide" -> "which see").
In some cases "cf." might actually be the correct term but it's
still not clear what specific aspects of a function/system call
one is supposed to be comparing.
I left one use in place in hope of obtaining clarification,
because it looks like it might be useful there, if contextualized.
Migrate these uses to English and add them to the list of
abbreviations to be avoided.
If the patch to vfork(2) is not accepted, then the cf. still needs
an \& after it because it is at the end of the line but not the
end of a sentence.

Capitalization in .SS sections across pages (and sometimes even
within a single page) is wildly inconsistent. Make it consistent.
Capitalize first word in heading, but otherwise use lower case,
except where English usage (e.g., proper nouns) or programming
language requirements (e.g., identifier names) dictate otherwise.
