Great to see Control Risks get a shout-out in Matthew Newman's recent piece on the Lowy Institute's Interpreter blog on geopolitical risk advisory. While we've had a decades-long presence in Australia, we've seen a noticeable uptick in demand from local companies in recent years wanting tailored advice on how to manage an increasingly volatile international landscape. For some, however, there is still a mindset that geopolitics - particularly nowadays - is too unpredictable to manage in any meaningful way. This "Normalisation Trap", as we've highlighted in our annual Top Risks for 2026, is leaving those companies "unprepared for events that seem minor on the surface but have profound implications for operations, supply chains, and security". This complacency is misguided. Scenario planning, trigger-based monitoring, geopolitical risk assessments - there are a multitude of methodologies and frameworks companies can use which provide a structured way to plan for and mitigate against potential geopolitical shocks. It's a meaningful - and increasingly important - part of the work we're doing not just in Australia, but globally too.
