Connecting millions of people to the energy they use, while making the energy system clean, fair, and affordable.

About us

National Grid lies at the heart of a transforming energy system. Our business areas play a vital role in connecting millions of people to the energy they use, while continually seeking ways to make the energy system clean, fair, and affordable. In the UK we own and develop the high-voltage electricity transmission network in England and Wales, taking electricity from where it’s generated to where it’s needed. National Grid Electricity Distribution delivers electricity to over 20 million people across homes and businesses in the Midlands, South West England, and South Wales. In the US, we own and operate electricity and natural gas networks, serving over 20 million people across New York State and Massachusetts. National Grid Ventures operates across the UK, Europe, and the US, developing, operating, and investing in large-scale clean energy infrastructure. National Grid Partners invests in entrepreneurs at the intersection of energy and emerging tech, with capital, resources, connections, and know-how.

    Chief Executive at National Grid

Today is my first day as CEO of National Grid. In the run up, I’ve been lucky enough to spend time getting to know National Grid colleagues across many of our operational sites and offices on both sides of the Atlantic. I’ve had the opportunity to engage with energy leaders and stakeholders in both the UK and US, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, UK Secretary of State Ed Miliband and US Energy Secretary Chris Wright, when he visited our Northport Power Station in Long Island. Three things that are clear to me:  ▶️ National Grid colleagues have an incredibly strong sense of purpose and pride in their role to keep energy flowing for everyone we serve.  ▶️ We're committed to our customers and putting them at the heart of all we do.  ▶️ Whatever we do as a business; safety, reliability and resiliency are always at the absolute core.  📸: How many people can you fit into a selfie? I count 56 here so I think we did a great job.

Former Group CEO of National Grid

Today marks the end of an era.    I joined National Grid as a graduate in 1991, moving from my hometown in South Wales to London. I never imagined that 12 roles and 35 years later, I’d be wrapping up my time at this fantastic organisation as Chief Executive.    Thank you to everyone at National Grid for all the support you’ve given me over the years, but also for what you achieve every single day. The thousands of people behind every light you switch on and the heat in your homes, the astounding engineering and system in place that has made every day possible - this will stay with me forever.     National Grid is a critical partner to an industry undergoing significant transformation. My time here has been a once in a generation opportunity, which I’m incredibly fortunate and proud to have been a part of. I have no doubt that National Grid will not only be in safe hands but will continue to go from strength to strength and thrive under Zoe Yujnovich‘s leadership.    📸 A photo from my early days at National Grid.

From football roots to a future-ready sports hub... Working in partnership with National Grid, television presenter and proud Cumbrian, Helen Skelton, took a trip down memory lane to Borough Park, home of Workington AFC, to see how the stadium will be transformed into the Cumberland Sports Village in 2027. A space designed to better serve the whole community. A bigger stadium means increased energy demand. Through The Great Grid Upgrade, we’re strengthening local networks and bringing cleaner energy to homes, schools, and community spaces like the future Cumberland Sports Village. • As we head to #COP30, we’re not just joining the conversation, we’re showing how #innovation is already delivering results for our customers and communities. Through National Grid Partners, we’ve invested in over 50 startups and launched more than 25 pilots that are helping us modernize infrastructure, improve reliability, and reduce environmental impact. Here’s just a few examples of how we’re making a difference: •Avoided $500K in infrastructure costs with Switched Source LLC grid-balancing technology, reducing carbon-intensive upgrades and enabling a cleaner grid in #NewYork. This project also creates skilled jobs in advanced power electronics and strengthens local supply chains. •30% fewer outages with AiDASH's AI-powered vegetation management, improving reliability and reducing emissions from reactive maintenance in #Massachusetts. The program supports local contractors and drives investment in sustainable vegetation services. •Faster, smarter project delivery using Sensat's digital twin technology, accelerating #UK infrastructure planning and minimizing environmental disruption. This approach fosters tech-sector employment and boosts regional economies by reducing costly delays. Today marks the last half-year results announcement with our current CEO, John Pettigrew. We’re in the second year of our £60 billion five-year plan and have invested over £5 billion in the first half of the year - up 12% year-on-year, ensuring our networks meet the changing needs of our customers. Key highlights include:  🔵 Investment in UK Electricity Transmission is up 31%, with all six of the first wave of our Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) projects in construction. And we’re in the final stages of agreeing our UK RIIO-T3 business plan and in the early phase of the RIIO-ED3 process. 🔵 In the US, we’re making strong progress with our New York Upstate Upgrade, with Smart Path Connect on track to be ready to energise in December. And we’ve replaced 208 more miles of pipeline across our US Gas businesses and agreed and started work on our $600 million Massachusetts Electric Sector Modernization Plan. All of which means we’re on track to deliver £11 billion of capital investment this year – another record for the Group. https://lnkd.in/eRjtghcg

How do we solve the world’s greatest energy challenges? Today, we took that question head-on at our second annual Innovation Day at the historic SoWa Power Station in Boston. We spent the day exploring how innovation, especially through National Grid Partners and the startups it has invested in, is bringing new technologies to help us build a smarter, more efficient grid and transform our industry for the better. Since 2018, National Grid Partners has invested nearly $550 million in 50 startups, and about 80% of them have helped us: ➡️ Better serve our customers ➡️ Boost efficiency ➡️ Decarbonize the energy system ➡️ Accelerate the development of tomorrow’s networks A huge thank you to our National Grid Partners portfolio companies, speakers, and innovators across the utility and technology sectors who joined us. Innovation requires collaboration across the utility sector and beyond. We’re all part of a community that’s not just imagining the future of energy - but building it. ev.energy Exodigo AiDASH LineVision Amperon TS Conductor Emerald AI Cogniac Corporation Leap #NationalGridInnovates #Innovation #Startups #FutureOfEnergy
