Check out the highlights from an event that was held at St. Joseph's Hospital to celebrate progress of the BayCare Proton Center. Attendees heard from guest speakers and patients and were even offered a behind-the-scenes look at the construction progress. This milestone brings us one step closer to offering proton therapy to our community. We look forward to treating our first patients next year.
The BayCare Health System Cancer Institute has reached a groundbreaking moment with the arrival of its proton therapy accelerator, the key technology that will power one of the most advanced cancer treatment centers in West Central Florida. St. Joseph's Children's Hospital Foundation board members and supporters joined BayCare leaders today to celebrate this milestone, marking an exciting step forward in bringing cutting-edge cancer care to our community. Guests also had the unique opportunity to tour the proton therapy accelerator, offering a unique glimpse into the science and innovation driving the future of cancer treatment. Located next to the Fred J. Woods Radiation Therapy Center at St. Joseph's Hospital, the new proton therapy center will provide a more precise form of radiation that targets tumors while protecting healthy tissue. This is especially critical for pediatric patients, as proton therapy helps avoid exposing vital organs, like the heart, lungs, brain, and reproductive system, to unnecessary radiation, reducing the risk of developmental delays, heart disease, infertility, and other long-term effects. Construction is progressing rapidly, with patient treatments expected to begin by mid-2026. To read more, please visit: https://bit.ly/4nNliPg
