Breakthrough news from Biological Sciences Division at the University of Chicago! Our scientists have identified a mutation in the CPD gene linked to congenital deafness and, crucially, found two potential therapeutic targets: arginine supplements and the FDA-approved drug sildenafil. A promising step toward treatment. Read more about this groundbreaking research: https://lnkd.in/g6cRfKkB

A new study by UChicago BSD researchers Elizabeth Tung and Tanya Zakrison evaluates the nation's first trauma-center Medical-Legal Partnership (MLP). This program provided legal advocacy at the bedside, helping patients secure $1.2 million in payments to address root causes like housing instability and income insecurity—disrupting cycles of violence. The researchers argue that expanding the definition of recovery to include legal advocacy should be standard of care for all trauma centers. UChicago researchers have discovered how two competing molecules made by your gut bacteria—queuine (promotes growth) and preQ1 (halts growth)—reach deep inside your cells to control their protein-building machinery. This breakthrough reveals a surprising new layer of host-microbe interaction, suggesting that the growth-suppressing power of preQ1 could be a game-changer for developing new cancer therapies. Dinosaur "Mummies" Reveal Unprecedented Details of Ancient Life In a groundbreaking study published in Science, University of Chicago researchers have achieved what paleontologists have long sought: a complete, confident reconstruction of a large dinosaur's appearance in life. Led by Professor Paul Sereno, our team discovered how 66-million-year-old duck-billed dinosaurs (Edmontosaurus annectens) were preserved through "clay templating"—a remarkable process where a paper-thin clay film captured exact surface details of scales, spikes, and hooves. The specimens came from a compact "mummy zone" in Wyoming's badlands, where teams of undergraduates have been collecting fossils for years. Key discoveries include a continuous fleshy crest transitioning to tail spikes, surprisingly small scales (1-4mm) for a 40-foot dinosaur, and wedge-shaped hooves—the earliest hooves documented in land vertebrates. "It's the first time we've had a complete, fleshed-out view of a large dinosaur that we can really feel confident about," says Sereno. This research offers a new toolkit for future paleontological discoveries. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gA-kyjbJ
