Each year on June 23, International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) celebrates the achievement of women engineers and encourages the next generation to consider engineering careers. Here at Indian River County Department of Utilities (IRCDUS), we celebrate Karrina Niemi! Karrina graduated from Florida Atlantic University in 2024 with a degree in Environmental Engineering. Prior to graduating, she interned with IRCDUS where she gained hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of public utilities. This internship made Karrina realize she wanted to work in utilities. After graduation, she joined IRCDUS as an Associate Engineer; a role that offers a strong balance of technical challenges and public service. In her role, Karrina will work on Capital Projects and identify needed improvements within Indian River facilities, prepare reports, and provide support to colleagues. Her goals include expanding technical expertise, gaining project manager experience, and help guide the county towards a suitable future. Being able to assist on projects that directly affect the community is Karrina’s favorite part of the job. #INWED25 #WomenInEngineering #FAU
