We're excited to share good news from the Becker Pond Dam Removal site in Mount Washington, Massachusetts. The Becker Pond Dam had become a safety hazard and impediment to fish passage. The results were immediate. One day after construction, brook trout were already using the newly constructed channel. Projects like this show how quickly ecosystems respond to this sort of work, and how the efforts of partners like The Nature Conservancy makes a positive difference every day. Thanks as well to SumCo Eco-Contracting for an excellent construction effort. https://lnkd.in/gA2vwMaS #damremoval #fishpassage #riverrestoration #environmentalengineering #engineeringwithnature #winsforrivers

Engineering & consulting firm specializing in investigations, design, & restoration of aquatic & riverine ecosystems.
About us
ABOUT US We are an employee-owned, interdisciplinary firm that specializes in investigations, design, and restoration of rivers, lakes and wetlands. Our team of scientists, engineers, and technicians collaboratively work with clients to develop solutions to complex aquatic challenges that balance human and environmental needs. History We got our start in 1983 when a few fly-fishing scientists combined their passion for rivers with knowledge of geomorphology, fish biology, and hydrology to return abused trout streams into the Blue Ribbon fisheries they once were. At a time when most restoration work was performed by individuals with specific interests, we took a team approach utilizing an array of disciplines that actively accounted for many interests, including natural processes. Our team took a risk on advancing this new approach. We launched the business with $4,000, an IBM typewriter, and desks made of old doors and file cabinets. Today Over three decades later, we continue to develop cutting-edge designs for river restoration projects ranging from cranberry bog restoration, to dam removal, to urban habitat improvements – just to name a few. As pioneers in this field, we continue to provide leadership in this developing industry. To learn more, stop by any of our offices – located in Hood River, Oregon; Bozeman, Montana; St. Paul, Minnesota; Madison, Wisconsin; Cambridge, Massachusetts; and Damariscotta, Maine – and you’ll see why our employees love to work here. It’s their passion, teamwork, and respect for one another that’s led to more than 1,900 successful projects across 4 continents and all regions of the United States.

We're thrilled to see the newly reopened Hinckleys Pond - Herring River Headwaters Preserve come to life. It's a powerful example of how restoration can reshape landscapes and communities. This project saw the ecological restoration of two retired cranberry bogs on Cape Cod, transforming 30 acres into wetland habitat, restoring 500 feet of pond shoreline, and creating a mile-long trail to open access for visitors of all abilities. #Restoration #Wetlands #EcologicalEngineering #TrailAccess #CapeCod https://lnkd.in/gQhPw5nR

🚧 Almost done at Estabrook Falls! 🐟 The fish passage is officially taking shape — the team just wrapped up the major work, and the big machines have left the river. Native fish like northern pike and sturgeon are now able to swim upstream past this former barrier.🙌 In this drone footage, you can see the sandbags holding back the flow on one side of the falls while crews lowered the bedrock to create a smooth ramp for fish to move upstream naturally. You might still spot some crews along the riverbank as we finish the last restoration touches — but we’re SO close.

SumCo Eco recently restored this 30 acre site consisting of two retired cranberry bogs that lie on opposite ends of the lovely Hinckley's Pond. Now that bog work has been completed, nearly a mile (4,780 feet) of stabilized stone dust trail has been installed, and boardwalk construction is underway. The SumCo Eco crew have also dismantled the pump house that was used for irrigation. In its place will be an overlook beside the pond with all-persons accessibility from the Cape Cod Rail Trail which runs through the site. Great story covering the center's latest North Fish Creek restoration project. Proud of the work the center and its many partners are doing to reduce the amount of sediment to the creek, bay and ultimately Lake Superior. Thanks to funders Great Lakes Commission and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), and partners Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), U.S. Forest Service Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, Fish Creek Restoration LLC, Inter-Fluve, K&D Excavating, and Town of Keystone. https://lnkd.in/gm-j7BYG

Awesome project at the restored Don River! "A Lake Story, a new commission by artist Melissa McGill, takes the form of a large-scale canoe procession that will write Lake Ontario’s story through colour, across the sky and water. Featuring 400+ local canoers and paddlers joining us for this memorable performance, participants will paddle in a coordinated, slow-moving procession. An epic celebration of Lake Ontario along the Toronto Waterfront, Melissa McGill’s project maps Toronto’s harbour and waterfront biosphere with the lake’s own vocabulary expressed through its natural colour palette. By giving visual voice to the interconnected relationships above and below the waters, the project invites us to shift our perspective to participate in and learn from nature’s wisdom and creativity."
A Lake Story 🌊 A Bentway-sized thank you to artist Melissa McGill, collaborators Jason Logan, Elder Duke Redbird, Alex Rand, our curators, producers, assistants, partners, and the community of devoted volunteers who made this extraordinary weekend possible. And finally thanks to our audiences, for showing up, supporting, and celebrating the story of the lake with us. A Lake Story is not over! Join us at Harbourfront Centre’s Concert Stage during Nuit Blanche for a screening of artist Melissa McGill’s epic celebration of Lake Ontario. Enjoy a documentary chronicling the project’s creative journey, and honour the community partners, paddlers, and artists who brought this story to life. The Coonamessett River flows free! Congratulations to the partners and our team on over a decade of work.
Congratulations to Massachusetts Division of Ecological Restoration's Eric C. Ford, PWS, RSS and the Town of Falmouth, MA on the completion of the Upper Coonamessett River Restoration Project! This is roughly the third (and possibly final) phase of restoration work in this watershed-scale initiative. The project is led by the Town of Falmouth in collaboration with MANY other partners, including DER. Eric has been part of the technical team since 2018, contributing expertise to restoration design (led by Inter-Fluve) planning, and construction (SumCo Eco-Contracting). The ribbon-cutting featured Rep. David Vieira, Rep. Thomas Moakley, Dr. Betsy Gladfelter, the Town of Falmouth Selectboard, Dept. of Fish and Game Commissioner Tom O'Shea, Association to Preserve Cape Cod's Andrew Gottlieb, Tribal Councilman David Weeden, and many others.

Reminder to mark your calendar for October 1 for our next webinar: Restoring Fish Passage on the St. Croix River: Engineering and Ecological Perspectives. The presentation will discuss technical approaches at sites in the St. Croix River (Skutik) watershed, a river that is the homeland of the Peskotomuhkati (Passamaquoddy) people and has the potential to support the largest run of migratory river herring on the east coast, with an estimated population capacity of 20-60 million fish.
