Smith College is restoring woody habitat through the control of non-native plants and introduction of native plant woody species in support of the Eastern ratsnake, a species listed as endangered in Massachusetts, with support from National Wildlife Federation and Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom grant program. Starting in July, the Smith College team began removing invasive species, including multiflora rose and barberry, to prep for planting native trees. The team is also conducting research to learn more about the ratsnakes preferred habitat. Rafting Iguanas? 🌊🦎 Four iguana species endemic to the Fiji Islands have long been an enigma. The only native iguanas outside the Americas, how did the reptiles get to this remote South Pacific archipelago? One popular theory held that Fiji iguanas are descendants of an extinct iguanid lineage once widespread in the Pacific. But a new genetic analysis shows that the reptiles are closely related to North America’s desert iguanas. Their results also suggest that ancestors of Fiji iguanas rafted 5,000 miles across the Pacific from western North America—the longest presumed transoceanic dispersal of any land animal. Let the light in ☀️ Martha Huard often takes bird photos in her hometown of Lago Vista. To capture pictures of elusive vermillion flycatchers, one of her favorite subjects, Huard has honed her skills. ”They are extremely keen, so stealth is required to view them,” she says. ”The summer sun filtering through the tree provided a great contrasting background to show him.” 🥈 People's Choice Award Runner-Up 📸 Martha Huard | 📝 Vermillion Flycatcher 2024 National Wildlife Photo Contest People’s Choice 📲: https://ow.ly/60PF50XpFen #wildlife #photography #birds #nature #lighting
