About us
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) entities have more than 10.4 million members and supporters globally, and PETA U.S. is the largest animal rights organization in the world. PETA focuses its attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: in laboratories, in the food industry, in the clothing trade, and in the entertainment industry. We also work on a variety of other issues, including the cruel killing of rodents, birds, and other animals who are often considered “pests” as well as cruelty to domesticated animals. PETA works through public education, cruelty investigations, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement, and protest campaigns. PETA Foundation was founded in 1993 as an organization that helps PETA run, and includes departments like IT, Development, and Interactive Media. PETA and the PETA Foundation are two separate organizations but work very closely together. Looking for a career in animal rights? See our open positions here: http://www.peta.org/jobs.

The heat is on for the wool industry, and its members are sweating. Consumers are ditching wool at a fevered pace, and they’re more aware than ever before that sheep farmers are driving one of the cruelest, most environmentally damaging fiber industries. The wool industry is now trying to greenwash its image in an attempt to prolong its inevitable demise, but we aren’t falling for it. Here are the top five reasons why you shouldn’t, either. https://lnkd.in/eydkeTWE #WoolIsCruel #Wool #Cruel #Animals #Sheep #Environment #GlobalWarming #Pollution #WearVegan #GoVegan #Vegan #Fashion #Clothing

Pop quiz! How do you turn an iconic New Jersey boardwalk into a death trap? The answer might surprise you: It’s all about hermit crabs. A peta2 student activist let us know that the city of Wildwood, NJ, sells hermit crabs from its boardwalk. Hermit crabs are super-social individuals who love to burrow and explore the natural coastline where they’re from, but most humans only buy one and don’t really understand these animals’ complex needs, setting them up for a short, lonely life. They can live for 30+ years in nature, but most sold as “pets” don’t make it past a few months. Hermit crabs aren’t protected under the federal Animal Welfare Act, so they can legally be denied humane care when they’re torn from their homes in nature, forced into painted shells by having their own shells violently cracked off their bodies, and sold like souvenirs to tourists along with saltwater taffy and novelty beach towels. Help save hermit crabs—tell Wildwood officials to ban the sale of these animals on the boardwalk! https://lnkd.in/e-nVwjTh #boardwalk #DeathTrap #HermitCrabs #cruelty #lonely #animals #souvenirs #tourists #save #TakeAction #AnimalLiberation #AnimalRights #ban

Buying secondhand is a great way to shop sustainably and stay budget-friendly—but when it comes to animal-based leather, even vintage pieces come at a cost. Animal skin items sold at thrift shops are no different than the ones on retail store racks—they all came from a feeling animal, and they’re all a product of extreme suffering. Wearing any animal-based leather reinforces the speciesist message that it’s OK to steal someone else’s skin. No one can tell if your animal-based leather boots or jacket are thrifted. All they see is someone wearing animal skin—and that normalizes it. https://lnkd.in/gea-qJh5 #Vegan #CrueltyFree #VeganLeather #Leather #Secondhand #Thrifting #Sustainable #Animals #AnimalCruelty #AnimalWelfare #AnimalRights #AnimalLiberation #Speciesism

On the mid-June morning when authorities, animal protection groups, and PETA arrived at “Save A Mutt Rescue,” the heat was already sweat-inducing. But for the nearly fifty dogs locked in haphazard kennels—many without any shade or drinkable water—the sun was unbearable. The property was a disaster. Suspect Betty Haynes seemingly dumped clutter and trash among piles of broken carriers and plastic doghouses filled with rainwater. She propped up dozens of flat metal traffic signs and used them to block the doors of dozens of pens, each holding between one and four dogs. This “rescue” was actually a hoarding hell. Haynes collected and imprisoned dozens of animals. The seizure followed a tip from a local woman who contacted PETA’s emergency after-hours line. PETA Senior Vice President of Cruelty Investigations Daphna Nachminovitch joined law-enforcement authorities and other animal welfare groups in removing the dogs, many of whom were extremely fearful due to being deprived of human interaction; some of them are still with foster caregivers due to the trauma of long-term isolation. In addition to staff from the Patrick County Animal Shelter, animal protection groups from all over Virginia, including Dogs Deserve Better Blue Ridge, The Squishy Face Crew Virginia, Old Dominion Humane Society, and Sanctuary Rescue, assisted in the rescue and removal of the dogs in Haynes’ property. The dogs were distributed among the groups to get assessed, recover, and have a chance at adoption. Betty Haynes’ court date is February 10, 2026. Never assume that someone calling themselves a “rescuer” is acting in animals’ best interests. Ask questions, demand transparency, and always trust your instincts. If a group seems secretive, overcrowded, or evasive, report it to authorities. https://lnkd.in/ecWzaJZ3 #dogs #cruelty #hoarding #heat #rescue #emergency #seizure #adoption #care #protect #advocate #activist #AnimalLiberation #animals

The shaky underpinnings of horse racing in America were revealed in a recent New York Times article. The headline was stark: "Dead Athletes. Empty Stands. Why are We Paying Billions to Keep This Sport Alive?" Investigative reporter Noah Schactman asked the questions that have needed to be asked for a long time--and reveals why horse racing--at least in New York State didn't die long ago. https://lnkd.in/gTEy8mYA #Horses #HorseRacing #Sports #Animals #AnimalCruelty #AnimalWelfare #AnimalRights #AnimalLiberation #NewYork #NYT
