Co-founder at Rill Data. Building BI-as-code for the future of data.

I’m thrilled to relaunch the Data Talks on the Rocks podcast next week — the newest episode with Joe Reis drops on Nov 18 — and I’m looking for guest ideas. Who’s a builder in data engineering you’d like to hear from? Past guests have included Hannes Mühleisen (DuckDB), Guillermo Rauch (Vercel), Ryan Blue (Apache Iceberg at Databricks), Alexey Milovidov (ClickHouse), Erik Bernhardsson (Modal), and lloyd tabb (Looker).

Helping business grow with Data & AI

A lot of companies are experimenting with AI agents right now. But most are stuck building pilots without real outcomes. We need to change that. I’m hosting a session on how to design and deploy AI-powered analytics that actually work in real environments.  We’ll cover core principles for success, and walk through how teams are using tools like Rill Data to run AI-powered analytics safely and at scale. If your goal is to make better data-driven decisions, join us to learn how. Register here: https://luma.com/pyikqdlc Date: Nov 18 @11am EST

In Rill 0.75, ask the AI agent to visualize your data, and it will respond with charts right inside the conversation! We also updated the homepage to help you get started faster 🚀 This builds on the last release of citation URLs & full semantic layer access, making Rill’s AI agent even more powerful for analysis and collaboration.

  • Rill 0.75 is out with tons of exciting features we'll highlight over the week. Up first is Dark Mode for Rill Developer 😎 We carefully refined chart palettes and UI elements so everything looks great in both light and dark themes. Keep an eye out for dark mode support in Rill Cloud coming soon! In addition, we overhauled our theming system to support Dark Mode and deep dashboard customization. Control primary, secondary, and background colors—or define your own palette entirely. Every color in Rill can now be tuned to match your brand or preference.

My head is spinning after a rapid-fire chat with data OG Joe Reis, fresh from his keynote talk at #smalldatasf, "The Great Data Engineering Reset." Topics included: • 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 – Why it's so hard to get a job in data today, and how to succeed despite the doomers • 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸 – What's driving the coalescence of dbt, SQLMesh, and Fivetran (Joe's hint: "money rules") • 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 – Hannes Mühleisen and Mark Raasveldt's DuckLake, how Ciro Greco's bauplan is "agentic storage", and why DataBricks paid bank for Ryan Blue and team's Iceberg infra • 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘀 – CSV, Parquet, and F3, the new format that Wes McKinney and Andy Pavlo are betting on • 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗷𝘂𝗷𝗶𝘁𝘀𝘂  – A sneak peak at Joe's upcoming book "Mixed Data Modeling", why data modeling is like mixed martial arts • 𝗔𝗜, 𝗔𝗜, 𝗔𝗜 – And whether AI may finally get us data folks back to our original mission, supporting decisions and driving outcomes • 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 – Why are people in the data community so nice? (Misery loves company, but we're not jaded neckbeards yet!). We're going to fast-track this next episode of Data Talks on the Rocks, link to follow! And thank you to Rill Data's team and investors for sponsoring this series (not that I gave them any choice).
