  • Our ReVital Cancer Rehabilitation Research Team has published a new article: “Implementing a Geriatric Assessment-Guided Rehabilitation Care Model in Community Oncology Care: Feasibility and Impact on Patient-Reported and Performance-Based Outcomes” in the journal, ‘Cancers.’ In this study, we found monthly geriatric health assessments were feasible and helpful to connect patients with rehabilitation during systemic treatment. The study also discovered that when frail or pre-frail patients were referred to outpatient rehabilitation, they experienced meaningful improvements in their quality of life, mobility, aerobic capacity and strength. This research underscores the importance of bridging oncology care and rehabilitation services. When we proactively identify vulnerability and intervene early, we can help optimize functional outcomes and support patients across the cancer recovery journey. We want to extend a big thanks to all the patients who participated, to our interdisciplinary research team and to our partners in oncology and rehabilitation for their contributions. Together, we’re advancing cancer care. We encourage you to read and share the full open-access article here: https://lnkd.in/e-gcjEJK Kelley Wood Mackenzi Pergolotti PhD MS OTR/L

From a young age, Thomas “Tommy” Haynie had a passion to serve others so it came as no surprise to his family when he chose a military path after high school. His service became the foundation for a successful civilian career in supply chain management – including his current role as materials manager at Select Specialty Hospital – Tallahassee and Select Medical Rehabilitation – Tallahassee. “A lot of the logistics management that I did in the military transitions the same over here. It’s just a change in the location and equipment,” said Tommy. “In the Army, it was Humvees and weapons. Here, it’s beds and vents.” In high school, Tommy participated in the Naval Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC). “I really enjoyed it,” said Tommy. “It was strict and structured — and that’s the kind of person I am. I like structure.” Following high school, Tommy enlisted in the United States Army. For five and a half years – including a deployment to Iraq – he served as a unit supply specialist, ensuring his comrades had everything they needed to do their jobs. Attention to detail was a crucial skill. Main items usually had additional components. For example, a weapon also needed a sight, a magazine and ammunition. After discharging from the Army, Tommy worked for 10 years as a senior inventory specialist for the City of Tallahassee before joining Select Specialty Hospital – Tallahassee in 2022. The hospital and its inpatient rehabilitation – Select Medical Rehabilitation – Tallahassee, help patients recover from critical illness or injury. Tommy ensures the hospital is stocked with the equipment and supplies that care teams need to do their jobs including beds, mattresses, ventilators, syringes, gloves and power cords. While health care can be a high-stress environment, Tommy says his military training taught him “to handle tasks and do whatever you’re asked and to keep your composure while you’re doing it.” To discover career opportunities available for veterans, visit: https://lnkd.in/egCGw9EM #VeteransDay

  • After her spinal cord began compressing due to a mysterious genetic condition, Gisele Soto underwent a laminectomy, a surgery to relieve pressure on the spinal cord by removing a portion of the vertebrae. While hopeful she would walk again following surgery, Gisele woke up and felt nothing from her chest down. Gisele’s surgeons recommended California Rehabilitation Institute , where she began the long road to recovery. Supported by a physician-led team of therapists and nurses, Gisele regained strength and movement while working with her physical and occupational therapists. Now able to walk in a limited capacity, Gisele continues to use Cal Rehab’s outpatient services to increase her mobility and endurance.
