🚧 A feat of engineering and construction 🚧 That’s what Pennsylvania Transportation Secretary Mike Carroll called the I-376 Commercial Street Bridge Replacement and the innovation behind this first-of-its-kind sliding bridge project in western Pennsylvania during a recent press conference at the project site. The complex project is on track, with weekly steel girder deliveries being assembled and erected as the new superstructure continues to take shape. It’s impressive to watch this future connection on one of region’s main traffic arteries rise piece by piece through the expertise and commitment of our crews and partners. We’re proud to support Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) in delivering a safer, more efficient corridor that will strengthen neighborhood connections and improve daily travel for surrounding communities. 🚧How It’s Built: Earthwork & Grading 🌎 Before bridges and roads can rise, the land itself needs to take shape. That’s where earthwork and grading come in. Our crews excavate, move, compact, and level thousands of cubic yards of soil to create stable, precise surfaces for foundations, roadways, bridges, and more. Using GPS-guided equipment, survey data, and field verification, we make sure every inch meets design specifications. Behind what looks like “just moving dirt” is a blend of engineering and science, studying soil behavior, slope stability, drainage, and compaction to ensure long-term performance. Depending on the project’s size and conditions, earthwork can make up a big part of the overall cost. It’s a major effort that often runs day and night to keep things moving and meet critical deadlines. But precision isn’t the only priority; sustainability is too. 🌱 By reusing excavated materials, balancing cut and fill, and implementing erosion and sediment control plans, our teams minimize waste, reduce emissions, and protect surrounding waterways and communities. S&B USA welcomed the current Leadership Pittsburgh Inc. class to the I-376 Commercial Street Bridge Project for a firsthand look at how infrastructure shapes everyday life in our region. CIO John Astfalk, VP of External Affairs Grant Ervin, and Senior Project Manager Michelle Olszewski, EIT shared the story behind the project’s purpose and progress, showing how rebuilding this bridge with accelerated bridge construction techniques and other innovations improves mobility, supports local businesses, and strengthens long-term community resilience. Our connection with Leadership Pittsburgh Inc. continues to spark meaningful conversations about the role infrastructure plays in a thriving region. #ThrowbackThursday We don’t just build roads, bridges, and tunnels—we’ve also helped shape the backbone of the Mid-Atlantic’s power grid. This kind of essential infrastructure work has long been part of what we do. Back in 2009, our Fay team took on one of the largest earthwork projects in our history, the 502 Junction Substation in Mount Morris, PA. This facility in Greene County is part of Allegheny Energy’s (now FirstEnergy) Trans-Allegheny Interstate Line (TrAIL) project connecting Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Virginia. 💪 In just 4 months, our crews moved nearly 2 million cubic yards of embankment, enough to fill over 600 Olympic-sized swimming pools or build a small mountain! With strategic blasting, multiple spreads, and long hours, we: • Built 28,000 square yards of access roads • Placed 330,000 cubic yards of toe and shear keys • Installed 24,000 linear feet of super silt fence • Completed the project safely with 110,000+ man-hours and zero recordable injuries 👷♂️👷♀️ Slide through the photos below to see the project from start to finish.  ⚙️ Built with grit.
