Protecting Communities, Saving Lives
About us
The Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor (SNP) serves the People of the City of New York by promoting the fair and equitable administration of justice for those of all races, colors, genders, sexual orientations, religions and nations of origin. Our mission is to protect the public and prevent overdose deaths by investigating and prosecuting high-level narcotics trafficking organizations and illicit prescription drug distribution networks, and by responding to community complaints about persistent drug activity and associated violence. Targeted prosecutions and alternatives to incarceration are essential components of an effective strategy to save lives and reduce arrests. SNP is built on a task force model and collaborates closely with the city’s five District Attorneys, who appoint the Special Narcotics Prosecutor. The office has citywide jurisdiction to investigate and prosecute felony narcotics cases and related crimes.

🌍🇬🇭 “In Mole’s Shadow: The Quest for Energy Access in Rural Northern Ghana“ Today I had the honor of presenting at the 42nd Cambridge International Symposium on Economic Crime, University of Cambridge, in the workshop on Terracide & Environmental Crime, organized by Mr Richard Parlour. I shared insights from our AfricaEnergyParks project, co-funded by European Union, focusing on how politics and governance intersect with energy security in Ghana. Our February fieldwork in Jang this year, on the edge of Mole National Park, has shown how access to energy is not only a technical and financial challenge but also a deeply social and political one. In Ghana’s northern communities, we witnessed both resilience and vulnerability: • Youth rewiring broken solar lamps to charge their phones — innovation born of necessity, not crime. • Women walking long distances for firewood, carrying the burden of health risks, insecurity, and environmental degradation. • Elders questioning whether new systems will last — or become yet another broken promise. These voices remind us that the energy transition must be rooted in trust, ownership, education and sustainability if it is to resist terracide and deliver real change. I would like to sincerely thank Mr. Richard Parlour and my beloved mentor Dr. nick ridley for invitation, and my project colleagues Mr. Moses Mengu, Prof. Tomas Moe Skjølsvold and Dr Lucy Kyauke for their guidance, encouragement, and inspiration. Their wisdom continues to remind me that integrity and critical thinking must remain at the heart of our work. As His Excellency António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations 🇺🇳 has positioned the UN as a moral voice on global challenges — from the climate crisis to pushing for reforms that make international cooperation more inclusive, just, and future-oriente: “Geography should not define destiny.” In today’s fractured global landscape, that belief feels more vital than ever. On 18 August 2025, we mark seven years since the passing of former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, an 🇬🇭 himself, remembered by many as a moral compass for our times. As he once said: “We can love what we are, without hating what—and who—we are not. We can thrive in our own tradition, even as we learn from others, and come to respect their teachings.” ✨ My wish for Ghana is simple: to hold fast to that compass he left us, and to carry forward his legacy of dignity, peace, and respect in today’s troubled world. In the shadow of Mole, the struggle for energy is also a struggle for dignity, resilience, and hope. #CambridgeSymposium #AfricaEnergyParks #EnergyTransition #AntiTerracide #Ghana #Sustainability Fatih Birol Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) NTNU Samfunnssikkerhet / Civil Security

I was recently honored with an invitation to join elected officials, community leaders, financial investors and other senior law enforcement executives at the official Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the Phoenix House Harlem Clubhouse! This new space represents our commitment to serving the Harlem community with compassion, care, and collaboration. And the Clubhouse stands as a testament to the value of community engagement, connection and recovery. The Harlem Clubhouse is located at 129 West 138th Street, NY, NY 10030, across the street from the famous Abyssinian Baptist Church in the heart of Harlem. It was a wonderful occasion punctuated by inspiring remarks, moving tributes and generous donations that all helped to inspire those on the road to recovery from addiction and mental illness who struggle every day to reach their goals with the support of a community that believes in them and is willing to invest in their success. Pictured in the ribbon cutting ceremony (from left to right) are Assemblyman Jordan Wright, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, Ann-Marie Foster, President & CEO of Phoenix House, and Councilmember Yusef Salaam. #Harlem #Community #Recovery #MentalHealth #AddictionRecovery #PhoenixHouse #Collaboration
