The Global Network on Extremism & Technology (GNET), is Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT)’s academic research arm housed within the Centre for Statecraft & National Security (CSNS) at King’s College London. GNET is dedicated to understanding how technology intersects with terrorism and violent extremism, and provides evidence-based Insights to help tech platforms, policymakers, and civil society respond effectively to online threats. GNET's work includes: ➡️ Tracking emerging violent extremist tactics and digital trends ➡️ Analyzing violent extremist content across platforms and communities ➡️ Producing research reports, briefings, and actionable recommendations ➡️ Supporting the GIFCT community with evidence-driven insights for safer online spaces By bridging rigorous research and practical application, GNET ensures GIFCT members and the wider tech ecosystem can anticipate, respond to, and mitigate harm in digital spaces. Important discussion to have in the current hybrid environment. Connecting/understanding levels of analysis across PESTEL is crucial to addressing (ie. acknowledging) emerging fronts. The ability of online information campaigns to weaponise possible existing grievances in communities that might 1/ experience a digital divide and/or 2/ lack defensive posturing is well worth attention. Research shows fires stoked on both sides of peaceful/lawful social movements in the previous decade. The likelihood of malign actors conducting the same for violent transnational social movements seems a reasonable assessment.
💡 INSIGHTS | Evidence to the Home Affairs Committee Recently, our Founder and Executive Director, Adam Hadley CBE provided evidence to the UK Home Affairs Committee on the urgent challenge of combating new forms of extremism. During his testimony, Adam highlighted a underexplored and concerning trend: The emergence of synthetic extremism devised and sponsored by foreign nation-states. In some cases, we are seeing hostile nation-states posing as terrorist actors, spreading extremist narratives online to undermine national security and social cohesion. Despite the seriousness of this threat, it currently receives far too little attention and investigative resources. We know that many nation-states value information operations above all else, and in the context of hybrid warfare, the control and manipulation of online information are among the first strategic objectives. Yet there is a significant intelligence gap when it comes to understanding where these narratives originate. Meanwhile, tech platforms could help curb this activity without significant new investments by leveraging existing tools and capabilities. The problem is not one of resources, but of awareness, incentives, and accountability. This issue demands urgent, coordinated action to close this gap and strengthen our collective resilience. The tragic blast near the Red Fort jolted all of us once again. It highlights a critical demand: 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥-𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭 in protecting our cities from terrorism. When we consider how AI is fundamentally changing this fight, two core applications stand out: 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧: AI can process thousands of hours of CCTV footage in minutes, identifying suspicious 𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐭 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬 and 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐯𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 across disparate feeds—a task that takes humans weeks. 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐌𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠: AI uses advanced data science to identify and map 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐱 𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐫 𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬 hidden within massive, fragmented datasets in the digital world (communications, finance, travel records). The stakes are simply too high for slow, manual data review. AI transforms fragmented clues into actionable, real-time intelligence. Preparing for an Uncertain Decade The Securitas Risk Intelligence 2025 assessment declares this year “the age of unconventional threats”. Escalating tensions, grey-zone warfare, and mass misinformation are destabilising assumptions of safety built over decades. Resilience, not reaction, must define the next decade. For security practitioners, this means investing in predictive intelligence, public trust, and cross-sector defence mechanisms, not merely hardware. Future leadership in international security will belong to those who can interpret complexity, communicate confidence, and connect national duty with global consequence. #ai #GCHQ UK Ministry of Defence 10 Downing Street NATO U.S. Department of State #Starmer #SecurityLeadership #RiskIntelligence #FutureOfDefence #StrategicResilience #GlobalSecurity Paris Graduate School
