Kansas made a strong showing at the recent ECDataLab Convening in Kansas City, an event that united early childhood data professionals from across the country, focused on the use of early childhood data to improve outcomes for young children and their families. CPPR's Sara Gardner, Jared Barton, Sushmita Samaddar, and Emily Bertels Kaufman joined representatives from the Kansas State Department of Education and Kansas Children's Cabinet in analyzing Kansas' Early Childhood Data System in its current form while also planning for the future. We immersed ourselves in our own data and practices while also learning from other states and national experts, together seeking to improve capacity, streamline efforts, and better meet needs.

🎉 Exciting news! I’m thrilled to share that our team has received QR funding for our project, “Improving social care prediction using advanced machine learning by identifying key factors influencing care needs and providing policy recommendations”, in collaboration with the Staffordshire Centre for Data Analytics (SCDA). This ambitious, multidisciplinary project aims to enhance adult social care by identifying the key factors influencing care needs and developing data-driven policy recommendations to support better outcomes for individuals and communities. Really looking forward to seeing how this work can help improve people’s lives. \cc Nadia Kanwal, Joseph Clarke, @rob price, @nicola, Paul Campbell, Kelvin Jordan, @chris street

Across California, families have long relied on the care of relatives, friends, and neighbors — caregivers who provide nurturing, culturally responsive environments that reflect families’ values and realities. We were proud to partner with the The David and Lucile Packard Foundation in documenting a decade of learning from their Family, Friend, and Neighbor (FFN) Care strategy. Our recent report, The Story of the Packard Foundation’s Ten-Year Effort to Champion Family, Friend, and Neighbor Care in California, captures how grantees, networks, and communities worked together to elevate FFN care as a valued, supported, and enduring part of California’s early care and education system: https://lnkd.in/edtrRtqu Read Packard’s reflections on their long-term investment in this strategy: https://lnkd.in/gPRQ2i6v

Early childhood programs don’t operate in isolation—they form a connected system of supports for children and families. Child Care Aware of America’s updated ECE State Policy Dashboard offers a national view of how states are investing in child care and early learning through funding and legislation from 2020 to today. Tools like this help leaders apply a systems-level lens, tracking how policies interact across programs to shape family experiences and outcomes. For more on how to use data to strengthen early childhood systems, read ECDC’s latest brief on the STEP Forward with Data Framework. 📊 Explore the dashboard: https://lnkd.in/g5anEjeN 📄 Read our systems brief: https://lnkd.in/gb5a4RBK

🚧 Accessing and using Head Start data isn’t always simple. In our 2023 Head Start Data Survey, states reported common barriers, including: - Limited data sharing or access (18 states) - Lack of infrastructure (18 states) - Data management and funding challenges These barriers can make it harder for states to analyze outcomes, inform policy, and improve programs that serve young children and families.
