With so much of today’s job search happening online, I find myself missing the value of in-person résumé drop-offs and more live networking events. (There are some locally). No doubt many professionals in the job market are expressing concerns about the impact of losing these face-to-face interactions. The personal connections, spontaneous conversations, and immediate impressions that once played such a meaningful role in the hiring process feel harder to create in a an online environment. I wanted to share a couple of simple things I’ve noticed can really help people boost their job search and stand out with recruiters. 1: Keep track of which jobs you apply for. With how easy it is to “Quick Apply” these days, it’s common to lose track. But being able to talk about a role you reviewed shows strong organizational skills and real interest when you’re speaking with a recruiter. It makes a big difference. 2: Follow up. If you haven’t heard back after a few days, send a quick message to the company or recruiter. I’ve seen how often it helps move things forward or keeps you top of mind. And a quick bonus tip, keep your LinkedIn profile aligned with your resume. Recruiters check both, and consistency really matters! They’re small things, but they go a long way toward showing professionalism, preparation, and genuine interest in the opportunities you’re pursuing. How often should you be applying for the same job? I often get asked by clients about the appropriate number of times a candidate should apply for the same job. The general recommendation is that candidates should only apply for a job once unless there is a significant change in their qualifications or the job requirements. Applying multiple times for the same role can come across as desperate or unfocused, and may even hurt a candidate's chances. Recruiters want to see that applicants are thoughtful and selective in their job search, not just mass-applying to every open position. Remember the ATS system saves all of your information and all of the resumes you submit are accessible to them. There may be some exceptions to this. If a candidate's initial application was submitted some time ago, and the job is still open, it could be appropriate to reapply, especially if the candidate has gained new relevant skills or experience in the meantime. Ultimately, the goal should be quality over quantity when it comes to job applications. Candidates are better off spending time tailoring their resume and cover letter for each unique opportunity, rather than repeatedly applying to the same role. Recruiters appreciate applicants who demonstrate genuine interest and fit for the specific job. ⚠️ Job seekers, beware! Recently, I encountered this situation after posting my #OpenToWork status. I’m sharing my experience to help you avoid a big waste of time you probably don’t have! Here's how it typically unfolds: - You make a post about seeking new opportunities using the hashtag #OpenToWork. - Multiple LinkedIn users, often posing as "recruiters” with reputable companies listed as their current, DM you, expressing admiration for your profile and claiming to have a perfect role in mind. They even share real job reqs for legitimate companies. They request your resume to "position you" for this opportunity. - After sending your resume, you receive the response that your resume is “completely noncompliant with current Applicant Tracking System (ATS) standards.” They suggest major “fixes” and offer to connect you with “resume experts” for assistance. - You quickly find out you’re not even messaging with a real person, but an automated bot capturing leads for a service. While ATS optimization is absolutely important, a legitimate recruiter or HR professional would offer constructive, specific advice or simply move on, rather than condemning your entire resume followed by an immediate pitch for a paid service.
