utimensat() and faccessat() support the flag AT_EMPTY_PATH since
Linux 5.8.
(actually Linux 5.8 added faccessat2(): glibc wrapper for faccessat()
uses faccessat2(), and faccessat2() does support AT_EMPTY_PATH).
Reuse the standard text used in many other -at manual pages.

We're trying to "standardize" on a paragraphing macro from the three
equivalent ones (P, PP, LP). We (somewhat arbitrarily) agreed on P.

- Add a new HISTORY section that covers the history of an API, both
regarding implementations and regarding old standards. This was
previously covered in VERSIONS, and in some cases in STANDARDS.
- Repurpose VERSIONS to cover differing implementations in _current_
systems.
- STANDARDS is reduced to only cover current versions of standards.
That basically means only C11 (C99 has been superseeded by C11; C17
is just a bugfix of C11, so not really a new version), and
POSIX.1-2008 (*-2001 was superseeded by *-2008; *-2017 was just a
bugfix for *-2008). The section also mentions for example 'Linux',
'GNU' or 'BSD' when a non-standard API is Linux- or GNU-only or if
it's (de-facto) standard in the BSDs.
- In some cases content that should go into one of these sections was
in NOTES. Move it from there to where it corresponds.
- In the SYNOPSIS, I added [[deprecated]] in some functions that I
found are deprecated by the relevant standards.
- A few other related changes...

Refer consistently to software versions. In most cases, it is done as
<software> <version>. In the case of Linux and glibc, use the project
name, instead of other terms such as 'kernel' or 'library'.
I found the uses of inconsistent language with the following:

However, I might have missed some cases. Anyway, 99% consistency is
pretty good consistency. We'll fix the remaining cases as we see them.

Replace the date by a placeholder (date) in the repo, as we're
doing with the version (unreleased). It will be filled when the
tarball is generated with 'make dist' (or equivalent) with the
date of the most recent git commit that modifies the page (as was
done previously by update_timestamps.sh, which has been removed).

Now that we have the LIBRARY section, and a 4th argument that
already tells that it's a page from the Linux man-pages project,
the 5th argument isn't telling any information that the default
value wouldn't. So let's just remove it.

STANDARDS seems to be much more extended than CONFORMING TO. For
consistency across the whole manual pages corpus, let's try to

If a file/directory has the immutable flag set, access/faccessat
will return EPERM if write access is requested. This is not
currently documented, presumably because it is Linux-specific
(though BSD has similar behavior that is documented). Perhaps
something like the following in the ERRORS section.
EPERM Write permission was requested and pathname has the
immutable flag set. (See also ioctl_iflags(2).)
Also perhaps add ioctl_iflags(2) to the SEE ALSO section.

These split out errors into separate lists (perhaps per API,
perhaps "may" vs "shall", perhaps "Linux-specific" vs
standard(??)), but there's no good reason to do this. It makes
the error list harder to read, and is inconsistent with other
pages. So, combine the errors into a single list.

In the RETURN VALUE sections, a number of different wordings
are used in to describe the fact that 'errno' is set on error.
There's no reason for the difference in wordings, since the same
thing is being described in each case. Switch to a standard
wording that is the same as FreeBSD and similar to the wording
used in POSIX.1.
In this change, fix some instances stating that 'errno' is set
"appropriately" to instead say "to indicate the error".

Different source styles are used in different pages to achieve the
same formatted output, and in some cases the source mark-up is a
rather convoluted combination of .RS/.RE/.TP/.PD macros. Simplify
this greatly, and unify all of the pages to use more or less the
same source code style. This makes the source code rather easier
to read, and may simplify future scripted global changes.
The feature test macro info is currently bracketed by .nf/.fi
pairs. This is not strictly necessary (i.e., it makes no
difference to the rendered output), but for the moment we keep
these "brackets" in case they may be replaced with something else.

Paragraphs should be separated by suitable markers (usually
either .PP or .IP). Do not separate paragraphs using blank
lines, as this results in poor rendering in some output
formats (such as PostScript and PDF).
Fix:
$ sed -i -e '1,/^\.EX/s/^$/.PP/' -e '/^\.EE/,/^\.EX/s/^$/.PP/' man?/*
And then some manual adjustments.

We have users who are terribly confused why their binaries
with CAP_DAC_OVERRIDE capability see EACCESS from access() calls,
but are able to read the file.
The reason is access() isn't the "can I read/write/execute this
file?" question, it is the "(assuming that I'm a setuid binary,)
can *the user who invoked me* read/write/execute this file?"
question.
That's why it uses real UIDs as documented, and why it ignores
capabilities when capability-endorsed binaries are run by non-root
(this patch adds this information).
To make users more likely to notice this less-known detail,
the patch expands the explanation with rationale for this logic
into a separate paragraph.

so that the client doesn't have to guess permissions or ID
mapping on its own.

Since in some cases (e.g. libguestfs's guestmount) it also has the
semantics where files can appear owned by root, but are actually
mutable by the user, despite what one might infer from the Unix
permissions.
