'NULL' is a null pointer _constant_. A 'null pointer' is a broader
concept. 'NULL pointer' is not a thing. See the link below.

We're trying to "standardize" on a paragraphing macro from the three
equivalent ones (P, PP, LP). We (somewhat arbitrarily) agreed on P.
Scripted change:
$ find man* -type f | xargs sed -i '/\.PP/s/PP/P/'
$ find man* -type f | xargs sed -i '/\.LP/s/LP/P/'

The execve syscall returns -E2BIG in 3 cases:
- The total length of the command line arguments and environment is too
large.
- An argument or environment string (including the NUL byte) is longer
than MAX_ARG_STRLEN.
- The full path to the executable (including the NUL byte) exceeds
MAX_ARG_STRLEN.
Spell out all 3 cases in the -E2BIG section.
Discovered by moving a too large commandline parameter to an environment
variable, and finding that things still did not work. Examined the code
in fs/exec.c to get the details.
This simple shell script starts failing at 2^17 on a system with 4kB
page size:
#!/bin/sh
STRING="a"
for loop in `seq 20`; do
STRING="$STRING$STRING"
export STRING
if /bin/true ; then
: # still under the limit
else
echo "fork failed at loop $loop"
fi
done
./exec2big.sh: line 10: /bin/true: Argument list too long
fork failed at loop 17

- Add a new HISTORY section that covers the history of an API, both
regarding implementations and regarding old standards. This was
previously covered in VERSIONS, and in some cases in STANDARDS.
- Repurpose VERSIONS to cover differing implementations in _current_
systems.
- STANDARDS is reduced to only cover current versions of standards.
That basically means only C11 (C99 has been superseeded by C11; C17
is just a bugfix of C11, so not really a new version), and
POSIX.1-2008 (*-2001 was superseeded by *-2008; *-2017 was just a
bugfix for *-2008). The section also mentions for example 'Linux',
'GNU' or 'BSD' when a non-standard API is Linux- or GNU-only or if
it's (de-facto) standard in the BSDs.
- In some cases content that should go into one of these sections was
in NOTES. Move it from there to where it corresponds.
- In the SYNOPSIS, I added [[deprecated]] in some functions that I
found are deprecated by the relevant standards.
- A few other related changes...

Refer consistently to software versions. In most cases, it is done as
<software> <version>. In the case of Linux and glibc, use the project
name, instead of other terms such as 'kernel' or 'library'.
I found the uses of inconsistent language with the following:
$ find man* -type f \
| xargs grep -i '\(since\|before\|after\|until\|to\|from\|in\|between\|version\|with\) \(kernel\|version\|2\.\|3\.\|4\.\|5\.\)' \
| sort
However, I might have missed some cases. Anyway, 99% consistency is
pretty good consistency. We'll fix the remaining cases as we see them.

There are different kinds of lists:
Tagged paragraphs
These are fixed in a separate commit (the previous one).
They are used for a list of tags and their descriptions.
An example is this commit message itself.
Ordered lists
Elements are preceeded by a number in parentheses.
These represent a set of steps that have an order.
When there are substeps, they will be numbered like (4.2).
Positional lists
Elements are preceeded by a number in square brackets
(index). These represent fields in a set. The index will
start at:
0 fields of a C data structure, to be consistent
with arrays.
1 fields of a file, to be consistent with tools like
cut(1).
Alternatives list
Elements are preceeded by a letter in parentheses.
These represent a set of (normally) exclusive
alternatives.
Bullet lists
Elements are preceeded by bullet symbols. Anything that
doesn't fit elsewhere usually is covered by this type of
list.
Notes
Not really a list, but the syntax is identical to
"positional lists".
There should always be 2 spaces between the list symbol and the
elements. This doesn't apply to "tagged paragraphs", which use
the default indentation rules.

Replace the date by a placeholder (date) in the repo, as we're
doing with the version (unreleased). It will be filled when the
tarball is generated with 'make dist' (or equivalent) with the
date of the most recent git commit that modifies the page (as was
done previously by update_timestamps.sh, which has been removed).
Scripted change (mostly):
$ find man* -type f \
| xargs sed -Ei '/^\.TH /s/.TH +([^ ]+ +[^ ]+) +[^ ]+ +(.*)/.TH \1 (date) \2/'

Looping with unsigned types is safer. See the link below.
When the iterators are used for accessing an array, use size_t;
otherwise, use the most appropriate unsigned type, which in most
cases is just 'unsigned int'.
Also adjust other variables that have to interact with the
iterators, to avoid comparison of integers of different
signedness.

The root of the repository is becoming a bit overpopulated and
unorganized, due to the recent addition of more mandirs, and more
informative and configuration files too. Let's create a specific
mandir <man/> that contains the mandirs <man[1-8]*>.

Now that we have the LIBRARY section, and a 4th argument that
already tells that it's a page from the Linux man-pages project,
the 5th argument isn't telling any information that the default
value wouldn't. So let's just remove it.
Scripted change:
$ find man* -type f \

STANDARDS seems to be much more extended than CONFORMING TO. For
consistency across the whole manual pages corpus, let's try to
unify, by following the most commonly used section name.

Most people actually want exec(3) (or one of its aliases);
the minutiae are a separate, rarer, concern, and execve(2) hijacks
man execve from all the other exec(3) aliases
(similarly to exec(1posix), but it's at least obvious in that case that
you got the wrong page)

In the RETURN VALUE sections, a number of different wordings
are used in to describe the fact that 'errno' is set on error.
There's no reason for the difference in wordings, since the same
thing is being described in each case. Switch to a standard
wording that is the same as FreeBSD and similar to the wording
used in POSIX.1.
In this change, fix some instances stating that 'errno' is set
"appropriately" to instead say "to indicate the error".

The majority of pages use .nf/.fi in SYNOPSIS, but there are
still many that don't and use .br to achieve newlines. Fix many
of those. This brings greater consistency to the pages, which
eases editing and may ease future scripted edits to the pages.
Many of these changes were script-assisted, with some additional
manual edits.

Quoting Branden:
*roff escape sequences may sometimes look like C escapes, but that
is misleading. *roff is in part a macro language and that means
recursive expansion to arbitrary depths.
You can get away with "\\" in a context where no macro expansion
is taking place, but try to spell a literal backslash this way in
the argument to a macro and you will likely be unhappy with
results.
Try viewing the attached file with "man -l".
"\e" is the preferred and portable way to get a portable "escape
literal" going back to CSTR #54, the original Bell Labs troff
paper.
groff(7) discusses the issue:
\\ reduces to a single backslash; useful to delay its
interpretation as escape character in copy mode. For a
printable backslash, use \e, or even better \[rs], to be
independent from the current escape character.
As of groff 1.22.4, groff_man(7) does as well:
\e Widely used in man pages to represent a backslash output
glyph. It works reliably as long as the .ec request is
not used, which should never happen in man pages, and it
is slightly more portable than the more exact ‘\(rs’
(“reverse solidus”) escape sequence.
People not concerned with portability to extremely old troffs should
probably just use \(rs (or \[rs]), as it means "the backslash
glyph", not "the glyph corresponding to whatever the current escape
character is".

"shared library"
The man pages variously use "shared library" or "shared object".
Try to more consistently use one term ("shared object"), while
also pointing out on a few pages that the terms are synonymous.

This patch the fact that a successful execve(2) in a process that
is sharing a file descriptor table results in unsharing the table.
I discovered this through testing and verified it by source
inspection - there is a call to unshare_files() early in
do_execve_common().

See https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=84701
As noted by C. Alex North-Keys:
1) Command name extensions considered harmful: Adding ".sh", or
any other unneeded extension, unnecessarily duplicates meta
information already present in the interpreter directive,
exposing an implementation detail that then ends up explicitly
part of other programs running this one. Later, when such a
script is replaced with a new version in Python, C, etc., the
useless ".sh" has to be retained to avoid breaking those other
programs' calls to this one, and now has a stark antifunction
of lying about the script's content and occasionally causing
admins to run undefined experiments as root (like
"bash -x ./reallyperlscript.sh"). Such extensions, while fine
in DOS which ignores extensions explicitly, is a serious flaw
in Unix-targeted script writing. Canonical documentation
from the Linux manual should not support such a flawed idiom -
recommending against it would be preferred.
A more extensive rant against them can be found at:
http://www.talisman.org/~erlkonig/documents/commandname-extensions-considered-harmful
2) The space after "#!" in the interpreter directive is minor -
and the kernel's fs/binfmt_script.c specifically allows for it -
but versions of unix have length limits from ~30 characters to
Linux's 127 or so (if that number's correct) so the space does
have a cost. Most scripts I've seen lack that space, and
there's no real reason to encourage it.

During the review of static analysis results, we discovered a
functional, but non-portable, use of execve(). For example:
char *cmd[] = { "/path/to/some/file", NULL };
execve(cmd[0], cmd, NULL);
The call succeeds. Yet, the static analysis tool (rightly)
pointed out that envp could be dereferenced. But digging into
glibc and the kernel, it appears that like argv, envp when NULL
is treated as if it were an empty list.
So, to clear things up, I'm submitting this patch to update the
man page to indicate that envp is treated like argv.

assert() by code that checks argc
See http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13569
As noted by Andrey:
The purpose of the assert macro, defined in <assert.h>,
is to provide a tool to check for programming mistakes
or program logic errors. However, the assert macro must
never be used to perform checks for run time errors,
since, with the NDEBUG macro defined, expressions within
the assert macro invocations are not evaluated/checked
for, resulting in behavior that was not originally intended.

The POSIX timers API is implemented (mostly) within the kernel,
so thse interfaces are system calls. Although there are as yet
no man pages, when they are added they should be in Section 2,
not 3. Therefore fix those pages that currently refer to these
interfaces as being in Section 3.

POSIX.1-2001 says that the values returned by sysconf()
are constant for the life of the process.
But the fact that, since Linux 2.6.23, ARG_MAX is settable
via RLIMIT_STACK means _SC_ARG_MAX is no longer constant,
since it can change at each execve().
Signed-off-by: Michael Kerrisk <mtk.manpages@gmail.com>

|
Starting with Linux 2.6.23, the ARG_MAX limit became settable via
(1/4 of) RLIMIT_STACK. This broke ABI compatibility if RLIMIT_STACK
was set such that ARG_MAX was < 32 pages. Document the fact that
since 2.6.25 Linux imposes a floor on ARG_MAX, so that the old limit
of 32 pages is guaranteed.
For some background on the changes to ARG_MAX in kernels 2.6.23 and
2.6.25, see:
http://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=5786
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10095
http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel/646709/focus=648101,
checked into 2.6.25 as commit a64e715fc74b1a7dcc5944f848acc38b2c4d4ee2.

Using a NULL envp does in fact seem to be portable (works
on Solaris and FreeBSD), but the Linux semantics for a NULL
argv certainly aren't consistent with other implementations.
