We're trying to "standardize" on a paragraphing macro from the three
equivalent ones (P, PP, LP). We (somewhat arbitrarily) agreed on P.

- Add a new HISTORY section that covers the history of an API, both
regarding implementations and regarding old standards. This was
previously covered in VERSIONS, and in some cases in STANDARDS.
- Repurpose VERSIONS to cover differing implementations in _current_
systems.
- STANDARDS is reduced to only cover current versions of standards.
That basically means only C11 (C99 has been superseeded by C11; C17
is just a bugfix of C11, so not really a new version), and
POSIX.1-2008 (*-2001 was superseeded by *-2008; *-2017 was just a
bugfix for *-2008). The section also mentions for example 'Linux',
'GNU' or 'BSD' when a non-standard API is Linux- or GNU-only or if
it's (de-facto) standard in the BSDs.
- In some cases content that should go into one of these sections was
in NOTES. Move it from there to where it corresponds.
- In the SYNOPSIS, I added [[deprecated]] in some functions that I
found are deprecated by the relevant standards.
- A few other related changes...

It's a proper noun, whose original letter case should be respected.
glibc's own documentation uses always lowercase; let's do the same here.

Refer consistently to software versions. In most cases, it is done as
<software> <version>. In the case of Linux and glibc, use the project
name, instead of other terms such as 'kernel' or 'library'.
I found the uses of inconsistent language with the following:

However, I might have missed some cases. Anyway, 99% consistency is

There are different kinds of lists:
Tagged paragraphs
These are fixed in a separate commit (the previous one).
They are used for a list of tags and their descriptions.
An example is this commit message itself.
Ordered lists
Elements are preceeded by a number in parentheses.
These represent a set of steps that have an order.
When there are substeps, they will be numbered like (4.2).
Positional lists
Elements are preceeded by a number in square brackets
(index). These represent fields in a set. The index will
start at:
0 fields of a C data structure, to be consistent
with arrays.
1 fields of a file, to be consistent with tools like
cut(1).
Alternatives list
Elements are preceeded by a letter in parentheses.
These represent a set of (normally) exclusive
alternatives.
Bullet lists
Elements are preceeded by bullet symbols. Anything that
doesn't fit elsewhere usually is covered by this type of
list.
Notes
Not really a list, but the syntax is identical to
"positional lists".
There should always be 2 spaces between the list symbol and the
elements. This doesn't apply to "tagged paragraphs", which use
the default indentation rules.

Replace the date by a placeholder (date) in the repo, as we're
doing with the version (unreleased). It will be filled when the
tarball is generated with 'make dist' (or equivalent) with the
date of the most recent git commit that modifies the page (as was
done previously by update_timestamps.sh, which has been removed).

Looping with unsigned types is safer. See the link below.
When the iterators are used for accessing an array, use size_t;
otherwise, use the most appropriate unsigned type, which in most
cases is just 'unsigned int'.
Also adjust other variables that have to interact with the
iterators, to avoid comparison of integers of different
signedness.

When reporting errors, prefer using conventional <err.h>
functions, rather than home-made macros. Home-made macros are
necessary for portable programs, so in documentation about
portable functions, keep using the macros. However, in the
documentation for functions that are only available in GNU/Linux
and/or BSD systems, prefer <err.h>, which is available in both
systems.
Do the same in example programs documenting portable functions but
in which we already require _GNU_SOURCE for some other reason.

Now that we have the LIBRARY section, and a 4th argument that
already tells that it's a page from the Linux man-pages project,
the 5th argument isn't telling any information that the default
value wouldn't. So let's just remove it.

FUTEX_LOCK_PI2 is a new futex operation which was recently introduced into the
Linux kernel. It works exactly like FUTEX_LOCK_PI. However, it has support for
selectable clocks for timeouts. By default CLOCK_MONOTONIC is used. If
FUTEX_CLOCK_REALTIME is specified then the timeout is measured against
CLOCK_REALTIME.
This new operation addresses an inconsistency in the futex interface:
FUTEX_LOCK_PI only works with timeouts based on CLOCK_REALTIME in contrast to
all the other PI operations.
Document the FUTEX_LOCK_PI2 command.

At the same time, document only headers that are required
for calling the function, or those that are specific to the
function:
<unistd.h> is required for the syscall() prototype.
<sys/syscall.h> is required for the syscall name SYS_xxx.
<linux/futex.h> is specific to this syscall.
However, uint32_t is generic enough that it shouldn't be
documented here. The system_data_types(7) page already documents
it, and is more precise about it. The same goes for timespec.
As a general rule a man[23] page should document the header that
includes the prototype, and all of the headers that define macros
that should be used with the call. However, the information about
types should be restricted to system_data_types(7) (and that page
should probably be improved by adding types), except for types
that are very specific to the call. Otherwise, we're duplicating
info and it's then harder to maintain, and probably outdated in
the future.

In the RETURN VALUE sections, a number of different wordings
are used in to describe the fact that 'errno' is set on error.
There's no reason for the difference in wordings, since the same
thing is being described in each case. Switch to a standard
wording that is the same as FreeBSD and similar to the wording
used in POSIX.1.
In this change, "to indicate the cause of the error"
is changed to "to indicate the error".

*roff escape sequences may sometimes look like C escapes, but that
is misleading. *roff is in part a macro language and that means
recursive expansion to arbitrary depths.
You can get away with "\\" in a context where no macro expansion
is taking place, but try to spell a literal backslash this way in
the argument to a macro and you will likely be unhappy with
results.
Try viewing the attached file with "man -l".
"\e" is the preferred and portable way to get a portable "escape
literal" going back to CSTR #54, the original Bell Labs troff
paper.
groff(7) discusses the issue:
\\ reduces to a single backslash; useful to delay its
interpretation as escape character in copy mode. For a
printable backslash, use \e, or even better \[rs], to be
independent from the current escape character.
As of groff 1.22.4, groff_man(7) does as well:
\e Widely used in man pages to represent a backslash output
glyph. It works reliably as long as the .ec request is
not used, which should never happen in man pages, and it
is slightly more portable than the more exact ‘\(rs’
(“reverse solidus”) escape sequence.
People not concerned with portability to extremely old troffs should
probably just use \(rs (or \[rs]), as it means "the backslash
glyph", not "the glyph corresponding to whatever the current escape
character is".

\& Zero‐width space. Append to an input line to prevent
an end‐of‐ sentence punctuation sequence from being
recognized as such, or insert at the beginning of an
input line to prevent a dot or apostrophe from being
interpreted as the beginning of a roff request.

So there are two things here regarding ordering. One is the
most obvious which is ordered due to the taking/dropping the
hb spinlock. Secondly, its the cases which Peter brought up
a while ago that involves atomic futex ops futex_atomic_*(),
which do not have clearly defined semantics, and you get
inconsistencies with certain archs (tile being the worst
iirc).
But anyway, the important thing users need to know about is
that the atomic futex operation must be totally ordered wrt
any other user tasks that are trying to access that address.
This is not necessarily the case for kernel ops. Peter
illustrates this nicely with lock stealing example; (see
https://lkml.org/lkml/2015/8/26/596).
Internally, I believe we decided that making it fully ordered
(as opposed to making use of implicit barriers for
ACQUIRE/RELEASE), so you'd end up having an MB ll/sc MB kind of
setup.

You're mistaken here. There are plenty of valid ways to use
FUTEX_REQUEUE - for example if the calling thread is requeuing the
target(s) to a lock that the calling thread owns. Just because it
doesn't meet the needs of the way glibc was using it internally
doesn't mean it's useless for other applications.

The kernel uses the following cast:

val2 = (u32) (unsigned long) utime;
This ensures that always the least significant four bytes of the
pointer are used, both on ILP32 and LP64 systems.
On a big endian system a simple cast from 64 bit pointer to 32 bit
integer would return the most significant four bytes.
We have to make the reader of the man-page aware of the usage
of the least significant bytes.

Here is the result of a first pass over futex.2. I tried to
do nothing that is too controversial. I tried to apply the
terminology that at least Darren and I had in mind
consistently; but please check again.
The major changes are in how futexes are described in the
introductory parts of the page. I hope it's easier to understand
now. I've also tried to add some more precision to the the
description of the synchronization semantics (e.g., it makes a
difference whether we claim something is atomic (without further
qualification), or just atomic wrt. other futex operations).
In some cases, that adds some verbosity to the text -- but I
believe that this is worth the clarity and consistency in using
terms, for example.

As reported by Rich Felker:
I see no code in the kernel whereby a "spurious wakeup",
or anything other than interruption by a signal handler
that's not SA_RESTART, can cause futex to fail with EINTR.
In general, overloading of EINTR and/or spurious EINTRs
from a syscall make it impossible to use that syscall for
implementing any function where EINTR is a mandatory
failure on interruption-by-signal, since there is no way
for userspace to distinguish whether the EINTR occurred
as a result of an interrupting signal or some other
reason. The kernel folks have gone to great lengths to fix
spurious EINTRs (see signal(7) for history), especially by
non-interrupting signal handlers, including in futex, and
allowing EINTR here would be contrary to that goal.
It's my belief that the "or a spurious wakeup" text should
simply be removed.
The reason I'm raising this topic is its relevance to a
thread on libc-alpha:
