Clean up in preparation for "MR sed".
Format only one man page cross reference per input line.
Begin parentheticals on their own input lines.
Also, groff 1.23.0's (and Plan 9 from User Space's) `MR` is not a font
style alternation macro; there is no "reversed" form as with `BR` and
`RB`. So when a man page cross reference must be immediately preceded
by punctuation, put that punctuation on the previous text line and use
the `\c` escape sequence to connect them.

We're trying to "standardize" on a paragraphing macro from the three
equivalent ones (P, PP, LP). We (somewhat arbitrarily) agreed on P.

When there are multiple tags for a paragraph, using a single TP and
separating the tags with commas makes the man(7) source more complex.
It also has a disadvantage: when searching through a manual page,
heuristics such as " --option" don't work so well.
By using GNU's TQ, we simplify the source of the pages, and improve the
ability to search them.

- Add a new HISTORY section that covers the history of an API, both
regarding implementations and regarding old standards. This was
previously covered in VERSIONS, and in some cases in STANDARDS.
- Repurpose VERSIONS to cover differing implementations in _current_
systems.
- STANDARDS is reduced to only cover current versions of standards.
That basically means only C11 (C99 has been superseeded by C11; C17
is just a bugfix of C11, so not really a new version), and
POSIX.1-2008 (*-2001 was superseeded by *-2008; *-2017 was just a
bugfix for *-2008). The section also mentions for example 'Linux',
'GNU' or 'BSD' when a non-standard API is Linux- or GNU-only or if
it's (de-facto) standard in the BSDs.
- In some cases content that should go into one of these sections was
in NOTES. Move it from there to where it corresponds.
- In the SYNOPSIS, I added [[deprecated]] in some functions that I
found are deprecated by the relevant standards.
- A few other related changes...

Refer consistently to software versions. In most cases, it is done as
<software> <version>. In the case of Linux and glibc, use the project
name, instead of other terms such as 'kernel' or 'library'.
I found the uses of inconsistent language with the following:

However, I might have missed some cases. Anyway, 99% consistency is

There are different kinds of lists:
Tagged paragraphs
These are fixed in a separate commit (the previous one).
They are used for a list of tags and their descriptions.
An example is this commit message itself.
Ordered lists
Elements are preceeded by a number in parentheses.
These represent a set of steps that have an order.
When there are substeps, they will be numbered like (4.2).
Positional lists
Elements are preceeded by a number in square brackets
(index). These represent fields in a set. The index will
start at:
0 fields of a C data structure, to be consistent
with arrays.
1 fields of a file, to be consistent with tools like
cut(1).
Alternatives list
Elements are preceeded by a letter in parentheses.
These represent a set of (normally) exclusive
alternatives.
Bullet lists
Elements are preceeded by bullet symbols. Anything that
doesn't fit elsewhere usually is covered by this type of
list.
Notes
Not really a list, but the syntax is identical to
"positional lists".
There should always be 2 spaces between the list symbol and the
elements. This doesn't apply to "tagged paragraphs", which use
the default indentation rules.

Replace the date by a placeholder (date) in the repo, as we're
doing with the version (unreleased). It will be filled when the
tarball is generated with 'make dist' (or equivalent) with the
date of the most recent git commit that modifies the page (as was
done previously by update_timestamps.sh, which has been removed).

Kernel __u64 and similar types are ABI-compatible, and mostly
API-compatible with ISO C types. User-space programmers don't
care about kernel details, and should only use libc types.
Document syscalls and structures provided by the Linux kernel as
if they used libc types.
There's work in the kernel to remove this small API
incompatibility, which is only for pointers or printf specifiers.
Since I couldn't find any structure that uses pointers, there
shouldn't be any issues here. Also, the only pointer I found was
in a syscall parameter, but since syscall(2) doesn't check its
arguments' types, we're also safe there.
This patch doesn't go without controversy. Check the discussions
in the links below.

Now that we have the LIBRARY section, and a 4th argument that
already tells that it's a page from the Linux man-pages project,
the 5th argument isn't telling any information that the default
value wouldn't. So let's just remove it.

In the RETURN VALUE sections, a number of different wordings
are used in to describe the fact that 'errno' is set on error.
There's no reason for the difference in wordings, since the same
thing is being described in each case. Switch to a standard
wording that is the same as FreeBSD and similar to the wording
used in POSIX.1.
In this change, reword various cases saying that 'errno' is set
"appropriately" to "is set to indicate the error".

*roff escape sequences may sometimes look like C escapes, but that
is misleading. *roff is in part a macro language and that means
recursive expansion to arbitrary depths.
You can get away with "\\" in a context where no macro expansion
is taking place, but try to spell a literal backslash this way in
the argument to a macro and you will likely be unhappy with
results.
Try viewing the attached file with "man -l".
"\e" is the preferred and portable way to get a portable "escape
literal" going back to CSTR #54, the original Bell Labs troff
paper.
groff(7) discusses the issue:
\\ reduces to a single backslash; useful to delay its
interpretation as escape character in copy mode. For a
printable backslash, use \e, or even better \[rs], to be
independent from the current escape character.
As of groff 1.22.4, groff_man(7) does as well:
\e Widely used in man pages to represent a backslash output
glyph. It works reliably as long as the .ec request is
not used, which should never happen in man pages, and it
is slightly more portable than the more exact ‘\(rs’
(“reverse solidus”) escape sequence.
People not concerned with portability to extremely old troffs should
probably just use \(rs (or \[rs]), as it means "the backslash
glyph", not "the glyph corresponding to whatever the current escape
character is".

It turns out no one is really sure what the perf_event_open.2
exclude_idle field is supposed to do, and a recent thread on the
linux-kernel list:
[RFC] perf/core: what is exclude_idle supposed to do
did not really clarify things.

Some discussion on the linux-perf-users list has turned up that
the perf_event_open.2 description of how
PR_TASK_PERF_EVENTS_ENABLE / PR_TASK_PERF_EVENTS_DISABLE prctl()
works is misleading.
The descriptions were based on the tools/perf/design.txt document
which describes behavior that was removed in 082ff5a2767a06 (prior
to 2.6.31, the first release with perf_event_open support).
I have written some tests in my perf_event_tests testsuite that
verifies the behavior of prctl() in this case.

Linux 4.3 (b20112edeadf0b8a1416de061caa4beb11539902) improved
the accuracy of the clock/ns conversion routines. As a result
the shift factor can now be 32. This value is directly
exported in the perf_event_open() mmap page, and this
potentially breaks the sample code that shifts 1 left by
the shift value.
Add a cast in the sample code so that a proper 64-bit value
results from the shift. This is the same change that was
made to the sample code in include/uapi/linux/perf_event.h
in Linux 4.4 (b9511cd761faafca7a1acc059e792c1399f9d7c6).

added a cycles field to the PERF_SAMPLE_BRANCH_STACK
last branch records.
The kernel commit was a bit vague on this, but you can find
a few more details on this in the Intel Architectural Manual
vol3B. The field indicates the number of core cycles elapsed
since the previous update to the LBR stack.
This feature is only found on Skylake and newer Intel chips,
as well as Intel Atom Goldmont chips. I'm not sure if it's
worth adding this info to the manpage, as it seems a bit
specific and will probably get rapidly out of date.

Linux 4.3 introduced two new record types for recording context
switches: PERF_RECORD_SWITCH and PERF_RECORD_SWITCH_CPU_WIDE.
The advantage over the existing tracepoint and software context
switch events is primarily that full switch in/out data can be
gathered even in the face of restrictive perf_event_paranoid
settings.

Linux 4.2 reserved a new bit from the misc field in
the perf_event_open() mmap sample buffer:
PERF_RECORD_MISC_PROC_MAP_PARSE_TIMEOUT
Despite being reserved in the public
include/uapi/linux/perf_event.h header file, this bit is never set
by the kernel. Rather, it is used internally by the user-space
"perf" utility to indicate that, when attempting to parse all of
the /proc/xxx/maps files for the sample, it ended up taking too
long so the scan was aborted.

The perf_output_sample_ustack in kernel/events/core.c only writes
a single 64 bit word if it can't dump the user registers. From the
current version of the man page, I would have expected two 64 bit
words (one for size, one for dyn_size). Change the man page to
make this behavior explicit.

The rdpmc instruction allows reading performance counters directly
from usersapce. Prior to Linux 4.0 any process could use this
instruction when a perf event was running, even if the process itself
did not have any open. The following changesets changed the default
behavior so that only processes with active events can use rdpmc.
Note this change broke the ABI. Previously:
/sys/bus/event_source/devices/cpu/rdpmc
Set to "1" meant allow across whole system.
After the change "2" means the whole system, and "1" means per-process.
Probably a better change would have been to add "2" to mean per-process
and make that the default setting. Probably too late to fix that now.

The primary difference between PERF_SAMPLE_REGS_INTR and the
existing PERF_SAMPLE_REGS_USER is that the new support will
return kernel register values. Also if precise_ip is
set higher than 0 then the PEBS register state will be returned
rather than the saved interrupt state.
This patch incorporates feedback from Stephane Eranian and
Andi Kleen.

Currently the PERF_EVENT_IOC_REFRESH ioctl, when applied to a group
leader, will refresh all children. Also if a refresh value of 0
is chosen then the refresh becomes infinite (never runs out).
Back in 2011 PAPI was relying on these behaviors but I was told
that both were unsupported and subject to being removed at any time.

However the behavior has not been changed.
This patch updates the manpage to still list the behavior as
unsupported, but removes the inaccurate description of it
only being a problem with 2.6 kernels.

Update the perf_event_open manpage to be more consistent when

Remove an inaccurate paragraph about values in the attr.config

This change clarifies the behavior of the PERF_FLAG_FD_OUTPUT and
PERF_FLAG_FD_NO_GROUP flags to perf_event_open(), and removes
the related FIXME comments.
While writing tests to validate the behavior of these flags I
discovered that PERF_FLAG_FD_OUTPUT has been broken since the
2.6.35 kernel release.

When checking the fields in the PERF_SAMPLE_DATA_SRC type samples
you need to shift the masks before doing the compare.
Although the value you are checking (perf_mem_data_src) is
specified as a bitfield so this might all fall apart if trying
to access the field in a cross-endian way. The Power people
were working on this issue, not sure if they resolved it.

This clarifies the PERF_SAMPLE_STACK_USER section.
I found these issue while implementing some code that uses
the option. The important change is fixing the name of the
sample_stack_user parameter, the rest is just some wording
fixes and minor clarifications.
