We're trying to "standardize" on a paragraphing macro from the three
equivalent ones (P, PP, LP). We (somewhat arbitrarily) agreed on P.

When there are multiple tags for a paragraph, using a single TP and
separating the tags with commas makes the man(7) source more complex.
It also has a disadvantage: when searching through a manual page,
heuristics such as " --option" don't work so well.
By using GNU's TQ, we simplify the source of the pages, and improve the
ability to search them.

The .TP macro is followed by exactly one line of definition, and then
multiple lines of flowed explanatory text. When flowed, the lack of
periods is apparent in sentences.

Our group recently had some confusion around this. Although f327722042df
("socket.7: Explain effect of SO_SNDTIMEO for connect()") adds a mention of
connect(2), the wording around "Timeouts only have effect for system
calls that perform socket I/O" is slightly confusing: is connect(2) I/O?.
Let's just add connect(2) to the list of things that time out explicitly to
avoid any confusion.

Refer consistently to software versions. In most cases, it is done as
<software> <version>. In the case of Linux and glibc, use the project
name, instead of other terms such as 'kernel' or 'library'.
I found the uses of inconsistent language with the following:

Replace the date by a placeholder (date) in the repo, as we're
doing with the version (unreleased). It will be filled when the
tarball is generated with 'make dist' (or equivalent) with the
date of the most recent git commit that modifies the page (as was
done previously by update_timestamps.sh, which has been removed).

The root of the repository is becoming a bit overpopulated and
unorganized, due to the recent addition of more mandirs, and more
informative and configuration files too. Let's create a specific
mandir <man/> that contains the mandirs <man[1-8]*>.

Now that we have the LIBRARY section, and a 4th argument that
already tells that it's a page from the Linux man-pages project,
the 5th argument isn't telling any information that the default
value wouldn't. So let's just remove it.

The majority of pages use .nf/.fi in SYNOPSIS, but there are
still many that don't and use .br to achieve newlines. Fix many
of those. This brings greater consistency to the pages, which
eases editing and may ease future scripted edits to the pages.
Many of these changes were script-assisted, with some additional
manual edits.

Augment the description of SO_PEERSEC to cover AF_INET sockets in
addition to the prior description for AF_UNIX.
SO_PEERSEC for TCP sockets was introduced in Linux 2.6.17 [1], and
SO_PEERSEC for SCTP sockets was introduced in Linux 4.17 [2].
This does not cover usage of SCM_SECURITY for UDP sockets, which
was also introduced in the same commit for 2.6.17.
Examples of the necessary labeled IPSEC and NetLabel
configurations to enable use of SO_PEERSEC for TCP and SCTP
sockets can be found in the SELinux Notebook [3] and the
selinux-testsuite [4].

SO_PEERSEC was introduced for AF_UNIX stream sockets connected via
connect(2) in Linux 2.6.2 [1] and later augmented to support
AF_UNIX stream and datagram sockets created via socketpair(2) in
Linux 4.18 [2]. Document SO_PEERSEC in the socket.7 and unix.7
man pages following the example of the existing SO_PEERCRED
descriptions. SO_PEERSEC is also supported on AF_INET sockets
when using labeled IPSEC or NetLabel but defer adding a
description of that support to a separate patch.
The module-independent description of the security context
returned by SO_PEERSEC is from Simon McVittie.

Historically, a comment of the following form at the top of a
manual page was used to indicate too man(1) that the use of tbl(1)
was required in order to process tables:
'\" t
However, at least as far back as 2001 (according to Branden),
man-db's man(1) automatically uses tbl(1) as needed, rendering
this comment unnecessary. And indeed many existing pages in
man-pages that have tables don't have this comment at the top of
the file. So, drop the comment from those files where it is
present.

Two reports that the description of SO_RXQ_OVFL was wrong.

This bug pertains to the manpage as visible on man7.org right
now.
The socket(7) man page has this paragraph:
SO_RXQ_OVFL (since Linux 2.6.33)
Indicates that an unsigned 32-bit value ancillary
message (cmsg) should be attached to received skbs
indicating the number of packets dropped by the
socket between the last received packet and this
received packet.
The second half is wrong: the counter (internally,
SOCK_SKB_CB(skb)->dropcount is *not* reset after every packet.
That is, it is a proper counter, not a gauge, in monitoring
parlance.
A better version of that paragraph:
SO_RXQ_OVFL (since Linux 2.6.33)
Indicates that an unsigned 32-bit value ancillary
message (cmsg) should be attached to received skbs
indicating the number of packets dropped by the
socket since its creation.

Generic SO_RXQ_OVFL helpers sock_skb_set_dropcount() and
sock_recv_drops() implements returning of sk->sk_drops (the total
number of dropped packets), although the documentation says the
number of dropped packets since the last received one should be
returned (quoting the current socket.7):

offset in bytes from which the data will be MSG_PEEK-ed.

Capitalization in .SS sections across pages (and sometimes even
within a single page) is wildly inconsistent. Make it consistent.
Capitalize first word in heading, but otherwise use lower case,
except where English usage (e.g., proper nouns) or programming
language requirements (e.g., identifier names) dictate otherwise.

socket(7) says:
SO_BROADCAST
Set or get the broadcast flag. When enabled, datagram sockets
receive packets sent to a broadcast address and they are allowed
to send packets to a broadcast address. This option has no
effect on stream-oriented sockets.
I believe the second sentence is half wrong: when I try it, it
only affects the ability to send broadcast datagrams. You can only
receive broadcast datagrams if you bind to INADDR_ANY and don't
connect. The POSIX standard agrees with my tests and disagrees
with the manpage:
