I am trying to sorting list of objects in my method, but I am getting an exception in jUnit test:

And this is my line of code where I am getting an exception:

Collections.sort(Database.arrayList, new CustomComparator());

CustomComparator:

public class CustomComparator implements Comparator<MyObject> {
    @Override
    public int compare(MyObject o1, MyObject o2) {
        return o1.getStartDate().compareTo(o2.getStartDate());
    }
}

How should I fix it ?

    "UnmodifiableList" Commented Mar 31, 2021 at 9:10
  • The comparator isn't the problem but trying to sort an unmodifiable list is (look at that fat UnmodifiableListIterator at the top of the stacktrace). Commented Mar 31, 2021 at 9:12

The list you are trying to sort - Database.arrayList - is an unmodifiable list, ie. all the methods that modify the state of the list will throw a UnsupportedOperationException.

Depending on your use case you can either change the implementation of Database.arrayList so that it is a modifiable list (ArrayList, LinkedList or other) or - just for the sorting - create a copy of that list and sort that one, eg.

List<MyObject> listCopy = new ArrayList<>(Database.arrayList);
Collections.sort(listCopy, new CustomComparator());
