🇳🇿 Greetings from the New Zealand Parliament! What an amazing opportunity to brief the Minister of Interior on the impact coming from the New Zealand Online Violence Prevention Programme. We have created New Zealand's first online referral mechanism to provide community-led off-ramps for individuals who are engaging with deeply violent content online, including glorification of terrorism, anti-minority violence, gore and graphic violent content. Grateful for support from the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, New Zealand and Department of Internal Affairs (NZ). Watch this space - More information to come on the programme's impact in the coming months. It is a critical moment where: 💻 The majority of New Zealanders spend over 4 hours per day online. 📲 73% of 16-17 year olds expressed concern about encountering harmful content online. 48% found it difficult to avoid harmful content. 🧠 Youth participants in a recent study by the NZ Classification Office described a range of emotional and psychological impacts of exposure to violent content online. 📈 As of 2022, 31% of teens (16-17 years old) had encountered online content promoting violence against specific groups. 20% had encountered violent extremist content, 17% encountered self-harm content, 16% encountered suicide content, and 15% had encountered eating disorder content. These numbers are likely to have increased since 2022. Huge shout out to Theresa Rajah and the whole Moonshot team who have invested so much personally in making this work a success. This work is only possible through our partnership with a wonderful, longstanding violence prevention organisation in New Zealand - thank you for your courage and innovation to bring your services to even more people in need 🤝🏾 And a final thank you to Dr Angus Lindsay, Glenn Williams, Manisha Bhikha, Rachel Sutherland for laying the groundwork for this programme and such a successful set of 14(!) government briefings this week in Wellington.

Online Violence Prevention | Social Inclusion Policy | Technical Advisory

Having just returned from this year's 'Megaweek' conference in Toronto, Moonshot joined over 250 practitioners, policymakers, thought leaders and tech companies to focus on “Polarisation and Preventing Violent Extremism“. With generative AI rapidly reshaping our threat landscape we know that meaningful opportunities to collaborate and share knowledge are critical. Megaweek was such a great example of how to create a multi-sectoral space in a way that is truly driving impact and innovation to prevent violent extremism. Public Safety Canada | Sécurité publique Canada has been at the forefront of catalysing the long-term partnerships and research that make this work possible. We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with Robert Burley and Brett Kubicek whose leadership and vision are behind impactful prevention programs, including our work in partnership with Canadian Practitioners Network for the Prevention of Extremist Violence, John Howard Society of Ontario, Organization for the Prevention of Violence, and Yorktown Family Services. There is much work to do, and it is a pleasure to be doing it alongside such fantastic partners 🇨🇦 More to come on our participation at Megaweek!

Reflections from an incredible week in Toronto. 🇨🇦 For nearly a decade, we at Moonshot have been proud partners of Public Safety Canada | Sécurité publique Canada to prevent violence online. Today, this work ensures that anyone engaging with extremist or terrorist content online in five Canadian provinces will be offered online access to critical prevention services. I am thankful for another successful "Megaweek" - which I fondly refer to as the Glastonbury of the prevention community. A week full of thoughtful discussion, exchange and even laughter - something we all desperately need doing this work. Thank you to Robert Burley, Brett Kubicek, and the whole Canada Centre team. Your leadership in the global terrorism prevention community is unparalleled. Highlights of the week include briefing Canada's Secretary of State, co-hosting a workshop *in a hockey rink* with the Christchurch Call Foundation, and convening a special Moonshot dinner on the future of AI and prevention as we look towards 2035. Shout out to my fellow panellists Stephanie Carvin, Karmvir Padda, Galen Lamphere-Englund for sharing your important work on how gender shapes different forms of violence, and what it means for prevention. And to our partners across Canada: Canadian Practitioners Network for the Prevention of Extremist Violence, Yorktown Family Services, Organization for the Prevention of Violence, RAPS, John Howard Society of Ontario - Thank you for your partnership and bold experimentation in bringing your services online to the people that need them most. 🇨🇦 💪🏾
