The plan for a global just transition to phase out fossil fuels.

About us

Climate change, like nuclear weapons, is a major global threat. Bold and immediate action is needed to address the climate emergency. The main cause of the climate emergency is fossil fuels. Coal, oil and gas are responsible for almost 80% of all carbon dioxide emissions since the industrial revolution. Phasing-out fossil fuel production, and fast-tracking progress towards safer and more cost-effective solutions, will require unprecedented international cooperation in three main areas: 1. Non-Proliferation: Preventing the proliferation of coal, oil and gas by ending all new exploration and production. 2. Disarmament: Phasing-out existing stockpiles and production of fossil fuels in line with the 1.5C global climate goal. 3. A Peaceful Transition: Fast-tracking real solutions and a just transition for every worker, community and country. The world is beginning to recognize that unprecedented levels of international cooperation will be required to prevent the proliferation of fossil fuels, to phase-out existing stockpiles and infrastructure, and to fast-track a just and peaceful transition to safer and cleaner alternatives. Just as fifty years ago the world needed a treaty to defuse the threats posed by weapons of mass destruction, the world today needs a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.

As part of the High-Level Action Agenda, Cambodia joined governments calling for a binding international mechanism to phase out oil, gas and coal and protect vulnerable communities. • From the heart of Belém and across the Amazon, over 70,000 local, national and international movements came together at the People’s Summit to confront the political, economic and climate crises shaping our lives. 🇧🇷🌳 The Declaration of the People’s Summit towards #COP30 lays out a bold set of demands rooted in justice, sovereignty, and the lived realities of Indigenous peoples, workers, women, youth and frontline communities around the world. Among these demands is an urgent call to end fossil fuel exploitation, and the creation of mechanisms to ensure the non-proliferation of fossil fuels. This means a just, popular and inclusive energy transition that protects territories, delivers reparation, and defends regions like the Amazon, which are vital to life on this planet. As COP30 negotiations are underway, this Declaration reminds us that real climate solutions come from the peoples who protect land, water, culture and life every day. • 📣 “We want an end to fossil fuel obsession. We need a #FossilFuelTreaty to put an end to it so that the process is fair.” At #COP30, Amnesty International Secretary General Agnes Callamard called on governments to end their addiction to coal, oil, and gas, and commit to a fast, fair, and fully funded phase-out that puts people—not profit—at the center of negotiations. Joining her, President of the Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative, Kumi Naidoo, highlighted growing global momentum for a Fossil Fuel Treaty, pointing to recent backing of the movement for a just transition away from fossil fuels from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the IUCN. Their message to leaders: COP30 must deliver a clear roadmap to phase out fossil fuels and ensure a just transition for all. 🔥
