I seem to be the only person that wants to freeze a screen on purpose. My use case is that I want to keep the image on the external monitor frozen while I switch windows or do other things on the internal screen. The goal is to not confuse the audience by windows flickering by.

When using a beamer then there typically is a remote control that allows for such functionality. However, that interrupts the workflow and therefore is a bit cumbersome. If there was a way to do this via software then I could assign that functionality to a hot-key which would be great.

Any suggestions?

Added: my current system is Kubuntu 24.04 using X11 window system. Switching to Wayland would be possible.

That sounds like take a screen shot and show that image on another screen, have you tried to open a image, say /home/user/image.png and open it in the other screen with ristretto it refresh the image if the source image is changed by any other program, and configure gnome or kde screen shot tool to save it to default image location. this way you just take screen shots with shortcut and it will appear on the screen automatically.

i think it depends on display server. what is your display server?

@ozkanpakdil: I have also considered the approach of displaying a screenshot. Though, that would also mean switching from screen mirroring in the live session to individual virtual screens for the still image on the beamer and then back again once the changes are done and the presentation continues. I suspect this would not go without both monitors going black as they do when performing theses steps manually.

I am looking for a seamless transition. My idea is to have some sort of still-image command for the graphics output. Like saying: freeze the currently given output and do not react to any changes.
