** UPDATE **

Currently the first node loads up on the screen (very small) and I'm now getting the following error in the Chrome console

Error: Problem parsing d="M72.3168,NaNC235.618512,NaN 75.93263999999999,NaN 239.234352,NaN"

This function generates a tree with nodes that you can click, drag, and re-arrange.

In the very first line, instead of passing in the JSON file as "flare.json", instead I want to pass in a javascript object. How do I edit this function so that I can pass in an object?

treeJSON = d3.json("flare.json", function(error, treeData) {

  • My answer did not take the update into account. Regarding the update, I suspect that the treeData you are providing is not in the correct format. I recommend creating a new question with the treeData to figure out what the exact problem is. Commented Mar 20, 2014 at 6:16

var yourJSObjectWithData = { /* ... */ };
(function(treeData) {
    // Calculate total nodes, max label length
    var totalNodes = 0;
    var maxLabelLength = 0;

    // ...

    // Layout the tree initially and center on the root node.
    update(root);
    centerNode(root);

})(yourJSObjectWithDataHere); // <-- Pass in your Data here

Instead of

treeJSON = d3.json("flare.json", function(error, treeData) {
// ...
}

try

var jsonObj = { }, // your JSON object here
    treeJSON = function(treeData) {
    // ... method body above here
    }

Then call your treeJSON method with your jsonObj object something like

treeJSON(jsonObj);
