I have webapp with Spring, Hibernate/JPA and Spring Data. I created repositories that extends JpaRepository for some entitites and everything were just fine with default methods like .save(T) or saveAndFlush, findAll, even with findBy, if some field name is simple as id (findById) or findByRole - where Role is enum or findByActive where active is the boolean field in given Entity. But when I try to do the same with fields which are complex object, I get into the trouble. I have enetity named Person. Person have field

private User manager;

with getters/setters. when I try to put this in PersonRepository like:

public interface PersonRepository extends JpaRepository<Person, Long> {

    List<Person> findByManager(User manager);
}

I got an exception during app deploy:

Context initialization failed
org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanCreationException: Error creating bean with name 'PersonRepository': Invocation of init method failed; nested exception is java.lang.NullPointerException

I tried even something like: findByManagerId(Lond id); and some other combinations, all the same. Any ideas?

    Which Hibernate version are you using? It seems like the exception is caused by Hibernate returning null from the call to getJoins(), which it clearly shouldn't. Also, your manager property has to be annotated with @ManyToOne in case it already isn't (your sample above doesn't show it to be). Commented Mar 26, 2014 at 14:12
  • It is alreadu @ManyToOne. Here is my hibernate and spring data pom: I will add dependecies in the question in a minute! Commented Mar 26, 2014 at 14:17

This solved my problem (stil dont know what is the thing with NullPointerException during the app init), but anyway, this helped (in my PersonRepository):

@Query("SELECT person from Person person where person.manager=:manager")
public List<Person> findByManager(@Param("manager")User manager);

and saved my day... I still think that should work without query and that NPE looks like a bug. Thanks guys!

This doesn't directly answer why you're getting the null pointer, but you could try making a custom implementation for that query instead. Read 1.3 of this documentation for info on how to do that.

I already did. What is the difference betveen findByEmail from doc and my findByManager? Complexity of the object?
From the doc: However, you can also define constraints by traversing nested properties. Assume Persons have Addresses with ZipCodes. In that case a method name of List<Person> findByAddressZipCode(ZipCode zipCode); creates the property traversal x.address.zipCode.
And: The resolution algorithm starts with interpreting the entire part (AddressZipCode) as the property and checks the domain class for a property with that name (uncapitalized). If the algorithm succeeds it uses that property. If not, the algorithm splits up the source at the camel case parts from the right side into a head and a tail and tries to find the corresponding property, in our example, AddressZip and Code. If the algorithm finds a property with that head it takes the tail and continue building the tree down from there, splitting the tail up in the way just described.
And: If the first split does not match, the algorithm move the split point to the left (Address, ZipCode) and continues.
Huh, that's cool. In that case I don't know why you're getting the null pointer, but I do still feel like with Spring Data it's often easier to customize a repository with some custom queries when you run into headwinds trying to do it the automagical way.
