I'm developing a web app in Java using Struts2. I need to send an email to the user upon successful sign up. I've following this tutorial. When I run it only my machine I encounter this error (I'm posting the complete stacktrace here):

javax.mail.MessagingException: Could not connect to SMTP host: smtp.gmail.com, port: 465;
  nested exception is:
    javax.net.ssl.SSLHandshakeException: sun.security.validator.ValidatorException: PKIX path building failed: sun.security.provider.certpath.SunCertPathBuilderException: unable to find valid certification path to requested target

I'm unable to understand solutions offered by other users. In fact, in most cases I think their cases were different than mine. I'm really new to Sending Mail using Java.

Here is the Java code:

public class Emailer extends ActionSupport {

   private String from;
   private String password;
   private String to;
   private String subject;
   private String body;

   static Properties properties = new Properties();
   static
   {
      properties.put("mail.smtp.host", "smtp.gmail.com");
      properties.put("mail.smtp.socketFactory.port", "465");
      properties.put("mail.smtp.socketFactory.class",
                     "javax.net.ssl.SSLSocketFactory");
      properties.put("mail.smtp.auth", "true");
      properties.put("mail.smtp.port", "465");
   }

   public String execute()
   {
      String ret = SUCCESS;
      try
      {
         Session session = Session.getDefaultInstance(properties,
            new javax.mail.Authenticator() {
            protected PasswordAuthentication
            getPasswordAuthentication() {
            return new
            PasswordAuthentication(from, password);
            }});

         Message message = new MimeMessage(session);
         message.setFrom(new InternetAddress(from));
         message.setRecipients(Message.RecipientType.TO,
            InternetAddress.parse(to));
         message.setSubject(subject);
         message.setText(body);
         Transport.send(message);
      }
      catch(Exception e)
      {
         ret = ERROR;
         e.printStackTrace();
      }
      return ret;
   }

Please tell me how I can resolve this error! I'd be forever grateful!

You have to put the SSL certificate to your JVM. To get the certificate from an HTTPS, go through a browser, then click on the "lock" logo on the address bar. You should be able to export the certificate.

Solution for Linux: In $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/security, use this command:

sudo keytool -import -alias keyName -file /[pathForYourKey]/keyName.cert -keystore cacerts

Default password for "cacerts" is changeit.

I personally do not like messing with the default truststore. I would recommend copying the default truststore, adding the certificate the way you recommend and then use the -Djavax.net.ssl.trustStore VM option at application start up.
@hooknc Yes, that's a better way.
