I have a problem in a big application with rich context, and I spent time to understand why it isn't mapped. So I tried to create simple project and face the same issue :(

    @RequestMapping(method = GET, value = "/${id}/item")
    public Map<String, Object> printWelcome(@PathVariable("id") String id) {
        Map<String, Object> model = new HashMap<>(1);
        model.put("item", id);
        return model;
    }

    @RequestMapping(method = GET, value = "/clear")

        Map<String, Object> model = new HashMap<>();
        model.put("item", null);
        return model;
    }

}

Tests:

GET http://localhost:8080/testMvc/items/clear => {"item":null}
GET http://localhost:8080/testMvc/items/1/item => 404 Not Found

What is wrong?

    Shouldn't it be @RequestMapping(method = GET, value = "/{id}/item")? No need to use $ there. Commented Nov 27, 2014 at 6:44

Replace value = "/${id}/item") into value ="/{id}/item". This is not EL expression , so no $ is needed here.

If what you want is a Regrex expression for Path variable, also put it into the {}. The syntax is {varName:regex} where the first part defines the variable name and the second - the regular expression .

Check Spring MVC Reference for more details of URI Template Patterns.
