I have a spring web application with the context file located at

 WEB-INF/spring/web-application-context.xml

The content of the web-application-context.xml looks like below:

...
<import resource="data-access-context.xml" />
<import resource="security-context.xml" />
<import resource="webmvc-context.xml" />
...

The application runs fine. When running a JUnit test, I specify the location of like this:

@ContextConfiguration(locations= {"file:WebContent/WEB-INF/spring/web-application-context.xml" } )

It is ok, but I got an error to load the data-access-context.xml which is imported in the main context file web-application-context.xml.

The error message is presented below:

  • As usual, the interesting part is close to the end of your error message: Error creating bean with name 'dataSource' defined in URL [file:WebContent/WEB-INF/spring/data-access-context.xml]: Invocation of init method failed; nested exception is javax.naming.NoInitialContextException: Need to specify class name in environment or system property, or as an applet parameter, or in an application resource file: [...] - I guess you've set this name in e.g. web.xml, but not when unit testing. After analysis you error messages it seems you are creating your DataSource (in data-access-context.xml file) using JNDI lookup and did the JNDI configuration in your application server to create the JNDI resource. That’s why while you are running your web application it is working fine. But while you are trying to run JUnit test cases it is failing.

Solution

So you can use separate data-access-context.xml file to run your JUnit test cases properly with the below mentioned configuration for 'dataSource'.

<bean id="dataSource" class="org.springframework.jdbc.datasource.DriverManagerDataSource">
        <property name="driverClassName" value="com.mysql.jdbc.Driver"/>
        <property name="url" value="jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/cpm?autoReconnect=true" />
        <property name="username" value="user" />
        <property name="password" value="password" />
    </bean>

Depending on the Database, you need to change the values. It is just a sample. Hope this will help you.

I created a separated data-access-test.xml. It works.
