I was working with Spring Boot project, and suddenly I faced with an issue that application can not load MySQL jdbc.(I compiled this project once without changing anything)
This is my pom.xml:

<parent>
    <groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
    <artifactId>spring-boot-starter-parent</artifactId>
    <version>1.5.9.RELEASE</version>
</parent>

<dependencies>
    <dependency>
        <groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
        <artifactId>spring-boot-starter-web</artifactId>
    </dependency>
    <dependency>
        <groupId>junit</groupId>
        <artifactId>junit</artifactId>
        <version>4.12</version>
        <scope>test</scope>
    </dependency>
    <dependency>
        <groupId>mysql</groupId>
        <artifactId>mysql-connector-java</artifactId>
        <!-- <scope>runtime</scope> I tried this too -->
    </dependency>
    <dependency>
        <groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
        <artifactId>spring-boot-starter-data-jpa</artifactId>
        <exclusions>
            <exclusion>
                <groupId>org.hibernate</groupId>
                <artifactId>hibernate-entitymanager</artifactId>
            </exclusion>
            <exclusion>
                <groupId>org.hibernate</groupId>
                <artifactId>hibernate-core</artifactId>
            </exclusion>
        </exclusions>
    </dependency>
    <dependency>
        <groupId>com.google.code.gson</groupId>
        <artifactId>gson</artifactId>
        <version>2.8.2</version>
    </dependency>

    <dependency>
        <groupId>org.hibernate</groupId>
        <artifactId>hibernate-core</artifactId>
        <version>5.2.10.Final</version>
    </dependency>
 </dependencies>

This is my application.properties:

spring.datasource.driver-class-name=com.mysql.jdbc.Driver
spring.datasource.url=jdbc:mysql://localhost/PROJECT_NAME?useUnicode=yes&characterEncoding=UTF-8
spring.datasource.username=root

MySQL database is created with hibernate at first. These configurations worked fine but I am not sure what is the real problem here

EDIT : I removed .m2 folder and install all dependencies from beginning as well.

You need to add version to MySQL connector dependency and you need to change the

spring.datasource.driver-class-name

property. MySQL changed the driver from

com.mysql.jdbc.Driver

to

com.mysql.cj.jdbc.Driver

You are missing the .cj. (This is for connector version above 5.* I think. Hope this helps.

Cannot load driver class: com.mysql.jdbc.Driver

clearly states that Hibernate could not find the jdbc driver.

In addition to changing the driver class name as noted above

spring.datasource.driverClassName = com.mysql.cj.jdbc.Driver

I also had to modify my pom.xml from

    <dependency>
        <groupId>mysql</groupId>
        <artifactId>mysql-connector-java</artifactId>
        <scope>provided</scope>
    </dependency>

to

    <dependency>
        <groupId>mysql</groupId>
        <artifactId>mysql-connector-java</artifactId>
        <version>8.0.14</version>
    </dependency>

to make sure the driver is present and have the message disappear.

This issue is resolved by changing your spring.datasource.driverClassName content and adding .cj into it, as Kristijan Rusu said.

spring.datasource.driverClassName = com.mysql.cj.jdbc.Driver

change mysql dependency version to 8.0.14..it works for me

and spring.datasource.driver-class-name=com.mysql.cj.jdbc.Driver

in application.properties

I had same problem. Resolved it by changing in pom.xml

<parent>
    <groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
    <artifactId>spring-boot-starter-parent</artifactId>
    <version>2.0.2.RELEASE</version>
    <relativePath /> <!-- lookup parent from repository -->
</parent>

to

<parent>
    <groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
    <artifactId>spring-boot-starter-parent</artifactId>
    <version>2.3.2.RELEASE</version>
    <relativePath /> <!-- lookup parent from repository -->
</parent>

and adding in application.properties

spring.datasource.driver-class-name=com.mysql.cj.jdbc.Driver
spring.datasource.url=jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/myproject

This is issue resolved after the below property corrected.

spring.datasource.driver-class-name=com.mysql.cj.jdbc.Driver

I meet this issue when try a third party demo. the project is

<parent>
    <groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
    <artifactId>spring-boot-starter-parent</artifactId>
    <version>2.5.4</version>
    <relativePath/> <!-- lookup parent from repository -->
</parent>

to

<version>2.3.3.RELEASE</version>

fixed my problem,it looks like the spring parent project issue.

I went into the maven repository here, and downloaded the "https://mvnrepository.com/artifact/mysql/mysql-connector-java/8.0.30" as a "jar" file. Then I added it to the "C:\Users\User.m2\repository\com\mysql\mysql-connector-java\8.0.30" folder of my computer. In pom.xml the dependency was defined as follows:

        <dependency>
           <groupId>com.mysql</groupId>
           <artifactId>mysql-connector-java</artifactId>
           <version>8.0.30</version>
        </dependency>

So, that solved the issue for me. I preferred to use the 8.0.30, since in the repository it is said to have "no vulnerabilities". And, apparently, for some reason, there is a problem with having the jar files in the directory mentioned above.
