Since you are using Spring project version 3.1.0 version or above and in the pom.xml file the spring-dotenv version is 4.0.0

In your application.properties file change the syntax should be $(MONGO_****) and not $(env.MONGO_****)

In your .env file mention the connection uri details

MONGO_DATABASE=""
MONGO_USER=""
MONGO_PASSWORD=""
MONGO_CLUSTER=""

In the application.properites file

spring.data.mongodb.database=${MONGO_DATABASE}
spring.data.mongodb.uri=mongodb+srv://${MONGO_USER}:${MONGO_PASSWORD}@${MONGO_CLUSTER}

I got the same error before making these changes and it was resolved. Hope it helps!
