For a school assignment I need a precise definition of OpenMP. I find the Wikipedia and other sources defective. Specificaly I need to understand what is the difference between OpenMP and OpenMP API. As far as I have read, OpenMP API is a collection of directives, library routines and environment variables. Are the two used interchangably perhaps?

It usually refers to the same thing. OpenMP is essentially an API (i.e. an interface). From Wikipedia: "OpenMP is an application programming interface (API) that supports ...". Maybe some may use "OpenMP" for the library and "OpenMP API" for the interface of that library. But this distinction usually doesn't matter for using it. Commented May 3 at 15:35

Is the assignment to present the difference you are asking about, or is that a means to some other specific purpose? If the latter, then this is probably an X-Y question. What relevant thing does the assignment actually ask of you? Why does the distinction matter? Commented May 3 at 17:05

OpenMP (R) is a registered trademark. The governing organization is the OpenMP ARB. They publish the OpenMP API specification. You need an OpenMP compliant compiler to actually compile an OpenMP program. The glossary of the specification defines more terms that relate specifically to OpenMP (e.g. OpenMP thread) Commented May 3 at 19:22
  • It is means to some other specific purpose. However I think it is important to have terms precisely explained and distinguished. Commented May 3 at 22:47

I think you question is quite similar to the question "What is Ford?". I think there is no correct answer. Is it the brand? Does it refer to the Ford Motors Company? Do you think of the f-series (if you are located in the US) or a focus/fiesta (if you are located in different EU countries)? It is of youse the last name of Henry. Commented May 4 at 8:58
