There is a RSocket server which I am interacting with. This RSocket server has tracing enabled.
Meaning, when I, and actually other clients talk to it, I can see server side traces in Grafana Cloud Tempo for instance. However, only the server side traces are present.
As a RSocket Client, I would also like to instrument my code to send traces to the same Grafana instance.
Here is what I tried:
package com.borrelunde.stockclient;
import org.springframework.boot.autoconfigure.condition.ConditionalOnMissingBean;
import org.springframework.context.annotation.Bean;
import org.springframework.context.annotation.Configuration;
import org.springframework.context.annotation.Profile;
import org.springframework.messaging.rsocket.RSocketRequester;
import org.springframework.web.reactive.function.client.WebClient;
/**
* @author B. Lunde
* @since 2025.03.04
*/
@Configuration
public class ClientConfiguration {
@Bean
@Profile("rsocket")
public StockClient rSocketStockClient(final RSocketRequester rSocketRequester) {
return new RSocketStockClient(rSocketRequester);
}
@Bean
public RSocketRequester rSocketRequester(RSocketRequester.Builder builder) {
return builder.tcp("server", 7000);
}
}
And I updated the pom as follow:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<project xmlns="http://maven.apache.org/POM/4.0.0" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
xsi:schemaLocation="http://maven.apache.org/POM/4.0.0 https://maven.apache.org/xsd/maven-4.0.0.xsd">

Please note, actuator, exporter OTLP and bridge OTEL are all present.
Even with the above setup, I am not able to see any traces.
What am I doing wrong, how can I send traces from a RSocket client?
