How to define custom guidelines/rules for JetBrains AI Assistant

Question

I'm looking to configure custom guidelines or rules for the JetBrains AI Assistant in my IDE. I was able to define guidelines for JetBrains Junie in .junie/guidelines.md.

My questions:

Do the Junie guidelines automatically apply to the AI Assistant as well?
If not, how do I define custom guidelines specifically for the AI Assistant?
Is there a separate configuration file or setting for AI Assistant guidelines?

Environment:

JetBrains IDE: Webstorm
Version: 2025.1.3
JetBrains AI Assistant version: 251.26094.80.22

It turns out that Jetbrains AI Assistant guidelines/rules can be set via the Prompt Library.

Goto Webstorm Settings -> Tools -> AI Assistant -> Prompt Library to provide instructions and guidelines for specific AI Assistant actions.

UPDATE: With v2025.2, we can point the AI Assistant at a guidelines file.

This does not answer @archulan’s question. In Settings | Tools | AI Assistant | Project Settings, there is a field called Path to guideline. However, in previous versions, at least in WebStorm v2025.2, this field had no effect. As far as I know, based on information from a friend at JetBrains, it should work in v2025.2. Still, it is unclear how exactly it works. I have not been able to find any official documentation explaining it. I will make further research and will come back.
