About us
CSNS is a new academic partnership between the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation (ICSR) and the Centre for Grand Strategy (CGS), based within the Department of War Studies at King’s College London. Both centres have now concluded their independent work to bring CSNS into existence. CSNS will build upon the existing strengths of ICSR and CGS – both known for producing pioneering and world-class research – establishing a new way of thinking about international affairs and national security, with an emphasis on integrated and long-term strategic thinking. CSNS will have an outward-facing role, working with policymakers on pressing issues of real-world significance. It will use historical and other innovative approaches to better understand the immense challenges of our current age – on issues from terrorism and extremism to great power competition and the rapid pace of technological change.

I was very honoured to speak at the Salzburg Global conference this year on Polarization and Violent Threats to Democratic Systems. A point I made was that we can’t have community resilience if we don’t have community. Everyone - far-left, far-right, extremists, and all in-between - agrees that atomization is a major societal issue. But they all have vastly different solutions. No movement can succeed without a compelling vision for what a future community looks like. I can imagine what the far-right or jihadis vision of a community looks like; and I don’t want it. What’s a centre left vision? It can’t be coworking spaces, run clubs, yoga groups, or farmers markets. Without that clear and compelling vison they will be lost at sea.
When was the last time you felt truly heard? Across the world, people are experiencing a growing sense of disconnection, a feeling that their voices matter less and that the spaces where community once thrived are disappearing. This atomization—the splintering of society—creates isolation that undermines belonging and weakens trust. At our recent session on Polarization and Violent Threats to Democratic Systems, we spoke with Michael Shipler, Nafees Hamid, PhD, and Amit Ahuja about how this disconnection shapes societies today, and how dialogue, trust, and strong institutions can help rebuild resilience and cohesion. 🎥 Watch highlights from the discussion and join us as we work to #ChangeTheConversation on polarization and democracy. #SalzburgGlobal
